I fired my Neuro

Recently, I asked all of you to share your opinion on changing MS Dr.'s since I had been trying for over 3 months to get my MRI and follow up appt. rescheduled.

Friday, I received a call from the Neuro's office with the rescheduled MRI appt and it is this Friday.  I am going to have the MRI because it is in one of the stronger machines.  They made my follow up appt for later on the same day.

I went to a Rebif sponsored meeting several months ago and met a Dr. in my same area.  I really, really liked her and had been thinking about changing to her.  Last Thursday, I went again to hear her speak and took all of my medical records for her to take with her and look at to see if she would accept me as a patient.  This morning, I received a phone call that she is more than happy to treat me.  I have an appt with her this next Monday.  WOW!!!  I am so excited!!!

As soon as I have my MRI and appt. with her, I am going to send a nice letter to the other Dr. and just let him know that it took me more than 3 months for his office to follow through on rescheduling my appts and that I will no longer need his services.  He is a nice Dr. but he had chosen not to treat me with DMD's and I just don't understand that.  After hearing the new Dr. speak in the Rebif meetings, it sounds as if she can really help me if she follows the protocol that she spoke of.  I am hoping to be a new person after seeing her.

I want to thank all of you who have supported me and shared your opinions.  It is difficult to change Dr.'s once you've received an MS dx because not every Dr. has the same philosophy on what constitutes one having MS.  There are way too many lesion counters out there and we all know that is not good.  I will keep you posted as I receive new information.  Meanwhile, thanks again for your support!

I will be sending a very polite letter.  Although the situation was very frustrating to me, there's no way that I'd be rude to him.  I like the Dr., it's his staff that has dropped the ball and I do think he needs to know so that he can fix the problem.  The problem was not of legal matter in any way and no need for legal action.  It's simply a situation of dropping the ball.

Thank you all for your comments.

From one physician's view, it is a courtesy to let a doctor know why you have left the practice.  I received a couple of those and, as much as they hurt, they did help me correct things.

It is just that, a courtesy.

There is actually no need to explain your leaving.  You are the consumer and have no ongoing contract to bind you to this doctor.  Writing a letter should be done if you really want him to know what went wrong with your relationship.  I would keep the letter polite.  Threats or even hints of legal action do ripple through the local profession and can make docs leery of you.

I'm thrilled you have found a better replacement!

I'm glad you have found a Dr. you can connect with.  It does make a world of difference when a pysician and patient can exchange information freely and work together toward optimum health.

I'd really think about it before sending that letter though.  Sometimes the written work doesn't come across in the nice way we intend it to.  Maybe you need to write it more than anyone in the office cares to read it?

And then my thoughts run mainly to being sure not to burn your bridges.  I guess I just wouldn't bother making my departure that obvious.  You never know when you might need something from that office again.  They could become real champs at procrastination - just to prove you right.  Anyway, if you fire the guy he might start looking for unemployment benefits!

Hoping things go well and you indeed start a peaceful journey toward better health.
