Recipe for Perfect Ice Pack

When my husband had hip replacement a few years ago, his surgeon gave us pre-surgery instructions that included making sure we had ice packs on hand to reduce his swelling and give pain relief.  AND they included a recipe to make our own.

It is such a perfect ice pack, I have made some recently again to use on my injection sites.  Here's the recipe -

2 large size Ziploc bags
1 bottle (16 oz) Isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol)
2 bottles (use the empty alcohol bottle) of water

(I have also done this with 1/2 the amount of alcohol and water in smaller quart size bags)

Pour the alcohol and water into one Ziploc bag and close securely.  Put the Ziploc bag with the liquid into the second Ziploc bag and close it securely as well.  This creates a leak barrier just in case the first bag leaks (like you didn't close it completely).

Put the bag in your freezer.  It will be a frozen slushy in about 6-8 hours.  Use as needed and put back in freezer when you are done.  It will last indefinitely.

Caution- be sure to wrap a towel around the bag - it gets very cold.  Also, be sure that you don't over-ice any part of your body because it is possible to give yourself frostbite with ice packs.

The good thing about this is it doesn't freeze rock hard like straight water, thanks to the alcohol.  It stays soft and the bag can be shaped around your body parts easily.

It sure beats using  a bag of frozen peas or corn!

Thanks for this idea!  Up until now I have used the unwanted frozen veggies in the freezer  :)  I like that this one molds to your body part.  Might be good for after my shoulder surgery!  Thanks again!

I'm on copaxone as well but Shared Solutions hasn't sent any ice packs to me - but there was an ice/heat pack in the "Welcome" kit the nurse brought to me..  The ziploc baggie thing is really flexible and wraps around all my body parts . :-)  Lulu

Interesting... I have two packs that Shared Solutions sent me.  They're really thick plastic bags, and they never freeze solid.  But if I have to replace it, I know what to do!
