SSEPs

As you know my last neuro visit was a desaster..  She dx conversion disorder.  So my question is, if I went for a SSEP  test and it was abnormal then that would not only blow her theory out of the water but would confirm there is indeed a problem. And it could help in getting a proper dx.

If it was normal , well then I could get the psyhc evaluation.

I have an appt with my DR tomorrow to talk to her about this neuros talk about conversion disorder and how angry I am about it  and that I want this theory put to the test so I can be taken seriously.

I have read that in the case where the MRI lesions are not conclusive then this test can add evidence to a disease process and possibly MS.

What are your thoughts on this anyone???

OK been back to my DR.  I told her about this new neuro how she said conversion disorder etc.. My Dr was so apologetic about what happened.  Guess she thinks im not malingering so I feel better knowing my Dr is on my side.

Didn't even get to asking about a psyc evaluation.....I forgot  lol!!  Doesn't seem nessesary anyway.

My Dr is writing to my usual neuro to ask about getting SSEPs done.  As I have had  a lot of sensory issues including numbness.

One thing my Dr got a letter from my norml neuro . He told me possible MS. In the letter he says::

She is aware of a possible MS dx but I dont think this is likely , given her symptoms are multifocal and at times transient in nature. Also the lack of accummulation of white matter lesions over time is against the dx.

OK so everything I have read about ms says symptoms can be transient at times and multifocal.????  Although I dont know what he means about transient. Most symptoms last weeks.  And we know about lesion counting and stable MRIs dont we.??

My DR wants me to have a lumber puncture.  So I said I will think about it. My neuro also suggested it.  I think I will wait and see about doing the SSEPs first.

I'm sorry you're having such a rotten time with doctors.

Do you have sensory symptoms (paresthesias, numbness, lack of sensation)? Then an SSEP might be helpful. The SSEP was the test that showed something was definitely wrong with my central nervous system (the previous doctors thought I had peripheral neuropathy). It can't say you have MS, but it certainly can show that something is physically wrong. It was the test that put me on the path to my MS dx.

You have nothing to lose but time and money so it could be worth a shot if it brings you answers. I hope your doctor's appt tomorrow is more helpful.

I know it's hard to do, but don't put any weight into what your neuro said.  You've got real evidence of something going on with you which points in opposite direction away from conversion disorder.  I hate to say it, but there are doctors, even specialists, that are sometimes, well, lazy.  I think that your doc possibly fits the D.U.M.B. diagnosis, but L.A.Z.Y. (Lacks Appropriate Zippity-do-da Yearning) fits your neuro better.

If your doctor tomorrow doesn't reassure you that you aren't crazy, then I would consider looking for doctors in a completely different area because all of them have caught the disease.

:) Deb

PS How are you keeping yourself so well-composed?  When I read your posts, I felt like my head was going to explode.
