Transverse myelitis

I was involved in a car accident and very soon thereafter developed symtoms very similiar to MS. I have not been diagnosed with MS but have transverse myelitis. Did anyone else out there have a diagnosis of transverse myelitis?

Hi there with Transverse Myelitis they only treat the symptoms, if they are bad enough to warrant it.  DMDs are not used for TM as usually it is a one of occurence.  In severe cases they do plasma exchange, but there is many trains of thought as to if this is successful and sometimes they use the IV steriods.

Perhaps if the pins and needles are bad they could prescribe gabapentin it may help.  With TM the symptoms are treated with the same meds they use for MS but there is no preventive medicine used.

I have bumped a post up about TM so it's now on this page.

Cheers,
Udkas.

How weird is this, I have MS. This winter my husbands hands became numb. My near dx him with TM. He has not gotten any better or worse since then. They haven't done anything to help him. No meeds or anything. If anyone knows anything about TM treatment, please let me know. Thanks

I was initially diagnosed with transverse myelitis in 2009. I'm assuming that they found lesions in your spine, but not in your brain?

For me, the lesions in my brain were missed by the radiologist, and my neurologist at the time never reviewed my scans himself. Long story short, I switched to an MS Center, and the neurologist there reviewed my MRI scans and found several missed lesions in my brain and T1 black holes. I was diagnosed with MS in 2010.

Yes, the symptoms of MS and transverse myelitis are very similar.

Welcome to the forum. We do have 2 members currently on the forum with TM. I am looking for the results of a couple recent posts about it with good links that somehow have disappeared.

It often involves the spinal cord and not the brain, thought like Guitargirl says some go on to be dx'd with MS.

Stand by, and we'll get you more info...

Hello, and Welcome!  You've found a great place with lots of knowledgeable folks.

What I do know about TM, is it often precedes MS.  You may also have MS that's been misdiagnosed, and are having a flare after your accident.  Have you talked to your neurologist, yet.  I think this would be an important first step.

Cheers
