Hmmm, are you sure your not having an allergy reaction to something? Both my kids have allergery reactions of itching that drives them out of their minds, son cant use soap or he can blister up all over his body. Daughter is the same but its her scalp, she also gets the itches of madness when she takes a tablet with a coating on it, and many other things. The only thing that has ever helped my DD is an antihystamine (hayfever meds) also a cool bath, you could try putting cucumber slices or cold tea bags on your eyes to help sooth them. Dont itch and id tell your dr, you might have allergies that need sorting out.
Cheers.........JJ
theres no redness or anything tho. neither my foods nor environment changes and this happens off and on at night only
I know how you are feeling with this itching, I have been suffering with this for about a year now, especially around my face & neck, there are many times when I get electric shocks which then causes my itching attack even worse. My husband says there are times I constantly itch like mad around my head/ face/neck sometimes my back, while I am sleeping, which bless keeps him from getting a good nights sleep. I seem to suffer with this through the day & night on & off, I can go weeks without a attack.
I have learnt to try to ignore some of my itching as I was making myself so sore & I was getting weird looks from strangers.
I had blood tests to rule out any allergy & to check my liver too, both tests came back normal.
I am in the Limboland but when I looked this up on google I found that this can be caused by nerves going wild at times, I'm sure one of the pinks will have more info on this.
I would though go to your doctor & inform them of this so he/she could do a blood test to rule out any allergies & anything else.
Keep us informed

i'm told i scratch my face in my sleep too and that i rub my face into my pillow which is prolly scratching, so that's interesting. now that it's getting to be day 5 am the itching has been replaced with twitching thigh muscle, which is so much better
Since the itching is replaced by twitching, this probably doesn't apply. However, since itching is worst at night, it could be a dust allergy. Our pillows and mattresses can hold a lot of dust mites.
Maybe a "scratch" test could at least rule it out so neuro will take ithe symptom seriously.
Hope you feel better.

Hey there!
I'm only experienced with the allergic related itching and think like mentioned you do have to talk w/your Dr. to get to the bottom of the cause - allergy needs to be ruled out (or in). You don't have to change anything to get allergic - can happen w/anything at anytime.
So sorry for your discomfort!

Yuck itching is the worst!! I would actually rather have pain of a level 5 or 6 over itching any day (maybe I'm weird, lol)
Two thoughts - One comes from the fact that it happened after you got out of the shower. Every time we shower (even if you don't use a soap) our skin dries out. It might not feel dry but can cause itching instead so I always use a light weight lotion all over after showering.
Kind of on the same thought but different, lol - dehydration. Some days we don't take in enough fluid to restock or body tissue and on those days you can again have dry skin whether you feel it or not that could cause itching. Also if you are dehydrated, you can get muscle fatigue that can cause cramps or twitching.
Hope you find relief!

Since you have posted your thread, I have been looking around the site to see if there were any anwers, as like you, I have suffered with this itch for the past year, with allergy tests etc coming back normal.
I found a thread that Quix had replied to, for another member regarding itching & MS, this is what she posted-- Yes, itch is definitely a form of paresthesia that can be experienced in MS. It also can appear in paroxysms. Itch can be more problematic than pain, actually. They are coping techniques for dealing with chronic pain, but they have not been able to find a way to help people with chronic itching. It is almost impossible to ignore or learn to live with.
But still go to the doctors to rule out anything else.

You are not alone. I would rather have higher pain levels than itching too. I appreciate your thoughts, too, about dehydration and such, but I used a hydrating lotion after my shower and then over and over again just to be doing something with my body other than scratching myself. And I drink lots of water(10 16 oz bottles/day), so if I'm dehydrated with how much water I drink that seems like another problem.
Thank you so much, though, really!

I'm really pretty sure that this is not an allergic reaction. It does not matter whether I'm in the bed or not and a night only dust allergy that's this severe is just too out there. I am always in the same one room day in and day out and that just doesn't seem to make sense that an allergy would come and go for a few hours at night on random nights. I'd be a good idea to get an allergy test to rule that out for doctors to see on the chart, but this is prolly some kind nerve thing if not just another MS thing I experience.
Thanks for your concern

Yes. I pretty much assume this is another MS thing. I got to the doctor this week, so I'll bring it up. It's prolly the first real sign I ever had of MS, but I dismissed it as anxiety for years. Since I was 20 I thought that when it happened I was just having an anxiety attack and imagining that there were bugs on me. Since realizing that this is a misfiring of nerves I don't even get freaked that there are bugs on me. Now I just acknowledge that it's a sensation that feels like there are bugs jumping on me and stinging me and I can easily see that there are no bugs.
The weirdest part of this is that it only happens at night. It happened last night actually, but this is really unusual. I had fallen asleep at 1 AM while my boyfriend was up and had all the lights on, but as soon as he turned out all the lights and got into bed I woke up from being so itchy. He was kinda mad, grumbling, "of course there's something wrong with you the second I go to bed" and I was like, "how do you think I feel?! I was fast asleep and woke up to this itching all over my legs and back!" But then it kinda sunk in that he'd said he just this second got into bed and *lightbulb*- it started because the lights were turned off! Isn't that just crazy?! Tonight I'm going to go to sleep with the lights on so maybe it won't happen at all. I'll let you know how this little experiment goes.
Much love to you,

Is there any hives associated with the itching??? That is what happened to me in Dec 2008/January 2009 and was told it was an allergy to latex because I work in the medical field...The allergy testing came back normal. Then after the holidays I was able to see my primary, and she said I have a *hunch* ...she did a bunch of blood work, and everything came back normal except the Epstein-Barr Virus Panel... I had an acute case of Mononucleosis! I had 2 weeks of prednisone and a month of allegra 2x a day and it finally subsided. This might not be it but it could be another thing to look at. Hope you find relief soon!

No, no hives or rash or any visible reason for the itching.
It hasn't been a major problem now that I'm not turning the lights off to sleep the last couple of days. It didn't use to happen every night tho, so I'll continue to sleep with them on.
