Voice issues getting worse throughout the day, cold or sx?

I know I am likely jumping the gun a bit here, but the last 4 days have me wondering....

For the last 4  days I have been having something strange happen with my voice. When I get up in the mornings I sound completely normal. By early afternoon I sound like I have a cold (you know that sort of slightly raspy voice that goes with a cold/cough?), by evening my voice is a lot quieter and very husky, and some words simply don't come out.

Now I have had a cold for about 2 weeks now, but I am on the healing end of it. I've been ever so slowly getting better for the last week or so. I cough first thing in the morning, and periodically throughout the day, but it was much worse a week and a half ago and I kept my voice. My kids have had this cold, my friends have had this cold (we're pretty sure it's the same because of how long it's lasted) but haven't had anything like this. One thing is, if I dont't talk for a while (like if hubby and I are watching a show or movie), then when I say something after my voice is slightly better. The more I use it, the worse it gets.

Even my super laid-back husband thinks it's odd.

How long should I give it before I go see my doc? At what point do I rule out the cold as the source?

It's getting frustrating because when I talk to hubby at night, I keep having to repeat myself, since his hearing is slightly impaired, and my voice is so low and husky.

Thanks for any input

Christine

I've had hoarseness problems for many years now with no clue as to why. I used to have it happen 3 or 4 times a year lasting anywhere from a week to a month. The longest I had it that way was 2 months. I finally had gone to a throat specialist as though there was no pain, or swelling it was just irritating to have it happen so often.

I had a cyst on my vocal chords which I had surgery on to remove and after that I could not even get a whisper out for 2 weeks. The specialist had no clue as to why. I still had it happen after the surgery and it wasn't until about 5 years ago that it slowed down and now I only go hoarse once or twice a year. Still no explanation, other than the one neuro I had seen who thinks that I have MS thinks it is from that.

As I am still undiagnosed at this time, I'm sorry that this is not helping you, but just wanted you to know that if it does not go away after your cold or the allergy medicine doesn't help, that you are not alone in this.

Yeah...Benadryl would count...I personally would try a dose and see if it helped...I can't take antihistamines but I would if I could.  I am currently sucking on sugar free candy and lozenges hoping that the increase in saliva will help but so far no luck...let me know if this helps will ya hon?

I have benadryl, does that count? LOL

Mostly I'm just curious. It doesn't hurt, it's not disrupting my life by much, it's just a weird little thing that makes me go "hmm, that's so odd".

With a history of "throat" problems (my swallowing/throat sensations) I'm super careful about anything having to do with the throat now. Especially because I REALLY don't want them to have to stick another tube down my throat!

Hey girl...I have been having a lot of problems with my voice lately too in that it's really hoarse and it gets worse the more I use it but the dr. looked at my throat and said that it looks to her to be allergy related.  This makes some sense since it is that time of year (FINALLY) when it is so dusty and the poplar fuzz starts coming out around here.  Also she said that the dry mouth I have been having is related to the Elavil I am taking.  I know you are not on Elavil but I was just thinking that with the end of the cold and all of the allergens around this time of year where you and I live..maybe it's just allergies?  If you can take an allergy med like Claritin it might be worth a try.  Good luck honey!

Hi,

I would give the cold the benefit of the doubt in this case, at least until the cold is completely gone.

The fact that it's a bit better if you don't talk as much would seem to me that it is due to irritation (from the cold).

Of course I could be wrong, and if the cold goes and the voice don't come back, reckon its time to check it with your Dr.

Shame about hubby's hearing problem - so that he can't understand your deep husky sexy voice! LOL.

Seriously, hope you feel better soon.

Hi there Chris my guess is it could be MS related but it could just as much be ralated to the cold you and you family have had, from my reading online over this last couple of weeks I have come to realise that many symptoms manage to present as MS making a diagnoses difficult, hope you feel better soon and it sorts its self out :)
