Want to know more on MS

I'm not well educated on the subject but I have a lot of curiosity about it due to my Mom having it.I have had some symptoms throughout my life but that doesn't mean anything necessarily. I work a physically demanding job and think everyone has at least one symptom or another.   I don't wish to be tested or assume anything. I just want to know more about how it happens.  Is it hereditary/contracted/random? I question all this now due to pregnancy.  I worry a little. Not that I'll contact it or anything of that nature, just what can happen or signs to watch for perhaps.

Hi and welcome to our little MS community,

It's pretty normal to have a bit of curiosity, as well as a few concerns during pregnancy. There are some promising research studies happening but at this stage, there hasn't been anything more than a lot of different theory's regarding the cause of MS, nothing as yet has been proven though. It maybe of some reassurance, to know that its 'more common' to be the only one in the family with MS, than it is to have multiple MSers in the family.

Pregnancy for an MSer is most often the time when their MS sx's remit, it's basically thought that the mothers 'immune system' for the duration of the pregnancy, is able to function more normal as its protecting the developing baby. It's actually more common to experience a relapse within the first months after giving birth and because MS is fairly unique to each person, i think it would be almost impossible to give you a list of MS signs to watch out for.

Even if you had a list of MS sx's, many of them could be commonly experienced after giving birth so it wouldn't really help keep things in perspective. It's probably just an unnecessary worry that you probably don't need to be thinking about, at one of the happiest moments of your life........

If you would like more information about MS, we have a few very informative health pages, that you might like to read, found at the very bottom of the page but most of the MS societies have a lot of very helpful information too.

Congratulations and enjoy the wondrous moments!

Cheers..........JJ
