muscle twitching

For the past week or so, the muscles in my legs are "twitching". My knees are also buckling at times. Am I right in guessing this is MS related? I haven't been on in a few days cause I was down with cold. So hello all and hope everything going ok.

Hi everyone. iv been doing alot of searching on the internet, to see why the heck im having so many darn problems with my health. when i stumbled across your site.  and from what iv read so far,, pin's down alot of issues iv been having.  The Leg twitches, Knee & ankle buckling, pain, and weekness.  Im not saying i have MS, as i have had a MRI and nothing showed up, but alot of symtoms you all have discussed seem to hit home with me.  My Dr say's I have Fibromialgia,   What i was wondering, does MS symptoms coinside with Fibrobiagia?

As for my cold, it's new...the flasciculations, they are not. LOL I've had them consistently for at least 8 months, maybe longer. I personally find it hard to pinpoint when something like that started, to me, it seems to sneak up on me.

Erica, I have to say, I don't envy you. The soles of my feet have been spared (although I do get them along the outter sides of my feet), and that seems to me as though it would particularly disturbing.

I tend to get them in the calves, thighs, sides of feet, and then sometimes in the rib cage, occasionally in the arms, and in the butt ALL the time (that drives me nuts, it's like my bum is doing it's own little dance, although it only happens on the left side).

I too get the jerks, but I try and seperate the "normal" from what's not normal. For instance, I get them in my left thumb all the time, but I know a lot of people get that, so I discount it. When my whole leg jerks to the left, or when my hand flips up towards the ceiling without cause, that strikes me as a bit more unusual, so I write it down

WOOHOO what fun this all is! LOL

I just had a cold.  A few weeks ago.  Not a bad one, just a few days.  The fasiculations are always there, since they first appeared almost two years ago?  But they increased during/after my cold.  Now it feels like the little  maggots are having little races under the skin of the soles of my feet and all around my calfs and shins.  A few in my arms and ribs.  LOL  I hope one of the group wins the race soon, it's a little 'disturbing'.

I also just had a bout of my imaginary ON, and have become really easily fatigued.  Keeping my arms raised to rinse my hair is tiring.  Wonder if this will help things to be seen on my mri tomorrow.  Active stuff?

Hi, in the context of MS, a cold is a potent stimulator of the immune system and so it often causes a flare -up of symptoms - a relapse.  Yes, fasciculations are common in MS, other neurological disorders, after viruses, etc.  and may be representing a relapse.  You should add the cold, when it started and when these twitches began.

The knee locking and bucking I have had.  I do think it is a discoordination of the order in which the muscles are doing their job so they don't work to keep you steadily upright.

Twitches or fasciculations occur in tiny fiber groups, but the do NOT cause movement across a joint.

So, the twitches in your finger are actually myoclonic "jerks".  Jerks refer to movement which causes movement of a limb or appendage.

thanks for all the great information! Now I understand. I too feel like worms under my skin, but not just in my legs. Mostly there, though. But have had it in my arms and elsewhere. And my fingers twitch (which makes it fun when it clicks the mouse when I don't want to).

It's kind of odd just the other day I was watching one of those medical show and this young lady came in and all see would say is (I got worms) upon looking at her she had cuts in her arms and one of her legs and each cut had like a pocket inside and sure enough so had worms in there and had names for all of them as they were pulling them out

Sorry about hte cold, I've been avoiding touching anything anyone else has touched and then touching myself or food, or whatever, lol.  So many sick people coughing around here these days.

I should have mentionned, I too am not diagnosed.  Over the last few years, I have had lots of tests, nothing showing up on mri, other tests within normal realms.  I go for another few tests soon, one this saturday.  We'll see if it's still all cear. sigh lol.

Wow, thanks for that post ELT.

I have been suffering from persistant and almost constant fasciculations since probably about June or July, also concentrated in the legs and feet, with an occasional "stragler" somewhere else (the rib cage is the worst!). I had some prior to that, but not like it is now. I take neurontin, which seems to help very slightly, but otherwise I have just become accustomed to it.

I would have used the analogy of worms under the skin (and have used it in the past), but hey, whatever works.

I've also had a few instances where my ankle has buckled without warning, and my knee has felt as though it was going to buckle on me.

I am not currently diagnosed, and am waiting to see an MS Specialist to see what she has to say about it all. I've had one family doctor suspect it, but then doubted herself when the MRI was clear, and I've had one family doc who's more than convinced it's MS, but it's taking it's time showing up on the MRIs.

I'm also waiting for a lumbar puncture.

I did a QUICK search for "knee lock" in MS, but didn't really find much. I will look a little harder later. I have a cold, and am being hit really hard with vertigo and fatigue, so I'll rest for a bit, and then see what I can find!

Hey, well, I have all sorts of what are called fasiculations in my legs and feet, I get them in other places, but, these  are the most frequent.  Almost constantly, I feel some movement under my skin.  I also get little jerks of my legs, toes, feet, fingers, hands, mostly legs though.

The fasiculations are like little ripples in the muscles, which are felt right under the skin.  Sometimes they are sooo busy, it looks like little masses of maggots under my skin.  Sorry, couldn't think of a more pleasant analogy, maggots fits. LOL

I had my right leg buckling under me all the time at work, before going off work four years ago.  It got really bad for a while when I was at my weakest.  Then it got better.  This latest bout of weakness seems to have my right leg doing it.  Worse than the right did.  And along with the right leg buckling under me all the time, I'm also experiencing lots of pain, not constant, just in waves which last a few moments at a time, in and around my knee and my hip.  Like its all tight and in spasms.

If I walk slowly and deliberately when it's like this, I'm usually okay, it's when I suddenly pivot or walk too quickly when I'm tired or not quite awake.  The other night, I woke up to use the bathroom, (I do this a few times a night) and I hardly could call forth the strength to get myself back up off the toilet.  My legs just didn't want me to stand up from a seated postition.  Bed called louder, though.  LOL

I read somewhere on some site, the buckling (and catching yourself) is the muscles not working together properly, it was called knee lock.  It was an ms information site, but, due to my lack of organizational skills, I have since lost the name of the site, and can't seem to find another reference to it.  Grrrrrr.

Oh, well.  Maybe someone in here knows it?'

Hi Willow Woman,

Love your name.  How did you come up with it?

Yes, afraid the twitching and buckling could be MS related.  You should let your dr/neuro know about this if you haven't already.  Maybe this is related to your having a cold which does tend to exaccerbate things.

Hope you're feeling better soon.
