When a person with MS has numbness can it last only a few minutes or is it always a longer amount of time.

I'm undiagnosed, so this is fairly useless, but definitely the numbness I have experienced lasted quite a while. My whole experience started when I found a numb patch on my face while shaving, and then when it hadn't gone away in a few days I went to the doctor. It stayed consistently numb for several months, then changed from numbness to pain (lucky me). It pretty much always feels 'different' than the rest of my body now, but some days it's more like numbness and some days it's pain. So who knows what that's about.

Watch your language!

To Lydia - No, the numbness and abnormal sensations of MS have a much longer duration than a few minutes.  Though they don't have to be absolutely constant, they last the better of of a day or more.  If they come and go, they come, last a good bit of time (there are no rules), but recur over and over during the day in exactly the same spot.

The reason for this is that the nerve is actually damaged and the damage does not show up just for a few minutes.

Limbolander comment: I had my left foot go numb in an S1 - S2 dermatomal distribution for about a month and a half. It was followed by several weeks of radiculopathy in all the sacral nerve distributions (quite unpleasant) on the same side. For several more weeks there was a constant icy/hot paresthesia in the saddle region, more pronounced on the left as well. It finally has all gone away, but there are some quick sensations of it returning every now and then - little pin ***** spots. I'm calling this the flickering stage before it finally goes off. Hopefully for good!

Other than that, there is some numbness in my hands and feet occasional (not all at the same time) that feel like a stocking/glove sensation.

Both of my feet seem to buzz most of the time, worse at night.  My left arm/hand buzzes, but seems to increase to the "level where I perceive it, and then drop down to where I don't notice it."  Sometimes it a few mins.  Sometimes I seem to go to bed with it and wake up with it for several days in a row. I get the buzz in my right arm/hand, but it seems to only visit at night or when I relax on the couch.  I think it's there, but at a much lower intensity than my left arm.

Not sure if this makes sense or not.  It's like there is a volume control and someone else has the remote.
