New here

Im so glad I found you guys!  I havent been diagnosed yet, but have a nagging feeling that my symptoms are related to MS.  I am scheduled for an MRI on Sunday if my family doc get the insurance auth on time!  I have read some of the info on this site through the realted links, but still have a question (forgive me if it was answered in the links, there is so much info!!)..So I have been experiencing symptoms that started with fatigue...which has subsided in the last 2 weeks or so, its still there but not as bad as it was, and shaking hand that seem to have a feeling of throbbing of sorts..but it is in both hands.  What I am mainly wondering is, are symptoms usually felt only on one side or is it normal to feel symptoms on both sides at the same time.  And, if you have MS will you have a hyper reflex in most of your pressure points or can most of them be normal, and you only have one hyper reflex?  Thanks for taking the time to answer.  Im so scared to find out it is MS, but I want to start treatment if it is to give myself the best chance!!

So I had my MRI and my dad and another doc I work with looked at it and said it looks pretty normal to them...my dad said he will go talk to the radiologist befoe he heads off to do surgery to get the radiologist to read the scans so I dont have to wait for the report.  I will still go see the neurologist....im betting next week...they only did and MRI of the head...so now Im wondering if they should have done the spine too!!  So realistically what is my next step?  If you have these symptoms and a clear MRI...do you have the neuro do the spinal tap???

Hi!

This forun has helped me a lot.  You can share and/or ask about anything, no need to censor yourself, and you will get caring and helpful replies.

From reading your story, it sounds like you may be more satisfied by answers from specialists outside of your father's circle of friends.  I'm sure your family and his friends mean well, but it is your body, and you should seek answers as you see fit.

Take care!

Hi, again!

It's so frustrating when those around us casually brush off symptoms that are so worrisome to us.  Too many of us have experienced that.  I'm sorry it has happened to you.

The 'off-balance' sensation you describe is troubling, and you really should be seen by a neurootologist!  Just kidding.  Really, an ENT or neuro, or MS specialist really should know about these symptoms and the strange arm sensations.  It is puzzling that they are bilateral.  Have you spoken to your dad's friend, the MS specialist yet?

Something is going on, and you need a good work up.  I will pray that the MRI is fine and clear and that a good doc gets to the bottom of this soon for you.  It could be many things, and we can help guide you as to which tests to ask for once you see someone .  Who ordered the MRI?

Take care, and try to relax this holiday weekend!

Okay...so here goes...Im 30...I just turned 30 on June 21st....and I had my 3rd baby on March 11th..so I have a little one at home.  My dad is a Neurootologist which is a specialized ENT dr..that does skull based surgery for tumors and such that have to do with ENT but are also Neuro related (he does alot of surgery with Neuro Surgeons).  I dont have the best relationship with my dad, as we dont have much in common.  We get along fine, he just isnt apart of my daily life.  The weird thing is...I work with him.  I do accounting for the organization he works for.  So I see him everyday, as I do my mom who is a nurse.  I have told my mom about my symptoms, but she always just laughs and says "you dont have MS"!  My dad really hasnt asked about what is going on, although I have asked him to call me in a favor to one of his friends, a neurologist that runs the MS center at our local hospital here.

So my symptoms..It started the day after fathers day.  For fathers day I decided I would complete my husbands yard work as a present which took me 3 hours of mowing and week wacking.  So when I got up the next day feeling fatigued, with weak arms, and being off balance, I attributed it to the yard work.  Well now its been 2 wks and the symptoms are not gone.  The fatigue isnt as bad, but I still do feel off balance...like im swaying when im standing still, not falling over or walking funny, just swaying when I stand still.  I attributed the weakness in both my arms to carrying a 17lb baby in a baby carrier all over town, and that also has gotten better. But I still do have the shaky arms...like Ive had too much caffiene...I do also feel weird sensations in my hands and part way up my arms almost like I can feel the blood pumping in them.  So that is it in a nut shell.  I have my MRI today at 8am...I had it bumped up when my auth came through from the insurance.  So pray for me that its clear and these symptoms are just a fluke!!!  I dont really worry for myself, but instead for my family and the implication this disease will have on their lives, if I do have it.

Hi, Joelle, and Welcome!  We ar so glad you found us, too!  We look forward to getting to know you better.

Jo has done a good job of welcoming you and giving you good information.  We try our best to inform and comfort those who are wondering, as you seem to be, if the symptoms they have are caused by MS.

I'm glad you've done some reading, and I'm glad you've got an MRI scheduled - with and without contrast.  It's a start.  Like Jo, I am interested in knowing who ordered it.  Dad's neurologist 'friend?'  I'm sure that's fine.  With your dad being a neurootologist, and loving you more than life itself, I'm positive he's sending you to the very best doctors, not just his golfing buddies.  He knows who's who and what's what.  You're his daughter, and he is not going to mess this up.  If he has, we'll let you know! Boy, will we!

It's very interesting that your dad IS an neurootologist.  What is HIS take on what's going on with you?  It may be hard for him to be objective. Is he taking you seriously, I wonder?

Jo is also right that you can have symptoms such as weakness or abnormal sensations on both sides, but it is unusual.  It sounds like you may be experiencing tremors, as you describe hand shakiness.  Could you explain that a bit more?  Is this your primary symptom?

Reflexes are good indicators of our neuro health.  It is completely possible to have one reflex be 'hyper' and not any other.  Is this what's happening with you?  Read up on Quix's 'Reflexes' Health Page.  It is very informative and will give you answers you didn't even know you had questions about!

If you can, tell us more about your symptoms, and we can give you a little better help.

Hang in there, and good luck with the MRI on Sunday!

Feel well,

Momzilla*

Hi again

You say Dad keeps sending you to to his "friends" .  How  many have you seen and in what length of time, and why didn't one of them order the MRI ?  If you don't mind me asking , how old are you?

I don't have the answer to where you can find a neuro in Washington .. You could try the MS Society web page.  Quix talks about another site  but unfortunately i can't remember the name , sorry

Good luck

Jo

My MRI is of the brain w/wo contrast.  I sometimes feel my dad just tells me to see his friends not because they are the best docs, but because they are his friends...and I really want a good doc that will really be up to date on current treatments.  So my family doc is ordering the MRI after doing alot of blood tests taht have come back normal.  I guess Ill do the MRI of the head and if it comes back clear I will ask for a referral to a Neurologist who Im guessing will hopefully do a spine MRI if he thinks MS is possible.  Could a tumor or something else cause my symptoms if its spine related?

Hi

Welcome to the forum.

This si a great place to get answers. meet people and feel understood.

I'm glad you're getting the mri, is it for brain.  l-spine and t-spine ..  with and without contrast?   Did one of your Dad's friends order it . Why don't you like him/her ?    It should be very confidential even if they are friends.

Yes you can have sx. on both side of your body at once. I think this would mean a lesion on the spine. My medical knowledge is very limited , so this is not gospel.

Try to relax until Sunday.  Stay here , read a lot , ask questions ..  More people will be along to give you better advise.

Wanted to say hi and you are not in this alone ..  :)      Could you tell us a bit more about yourself / story ?  We're very nosy here.  :)

Hugs            Jo
