Gaze evoked tinnitus?

Has anyone experienced a sudden ringing sound when looking left or right? I know it sounds strange but I had an episode of this that lasted for about a month, then it went away on its own. I found some information about this online, but what I found had nothing to do with MS. And of course my neurologist didn't believe that eye movement can cause ear ringing.
Thanks,
Brian

Hi James -

Welcome to our MS Funfest! The this thread is rather old. The last post was 5 1/2 years ago and I don't think Brian is participating any longer.

Why not "Post a Question" (via the link at the top of the page) and introduce yourself. We're a pretty friendly bunch :-)

my guess is you had some sort of head trauma... maybe something like an exposure to some ordinance going off?
if so, it's likely to be a result of mTBI. Get used to it. Its not likely to go away... at least mine hasn't.

Yes, I have a variation of this problem.  After I have been awake for 4 or 5 hours, I start having a whirling sensation, that feels like I have nystagmus.  At first I have it when my eyes look left.  But, it eventually involves my right eye also.  Once it is full-blown I cannot function until I sleep soundly.  This is by far my most disabling symptom after the vertigo.  My neurologist is also a neuro-otologist.  He says he knows of the problem and that it is typically seen in people who have had head trauma or migraines.  I have had a few concussions and looking back, this did begin after my worst one 25 years ago, long before my MS.  He knows of no treatment.

I find the connection to possible optic neuritis, mentioned by Deb, very interesting and would follow her advice.

Yes, I have this problem.  I've had tinnitus for years now.  A few months ago, I began noticing that when I looked left or right, I would get a sound burst from my already ringing ears.  You need to see a neuro opthamologist.  About a month ago, I went to the opthamologist and he told me that I had optic neuritis.  I'd get this check out.

Do you have MS?

I have tinnitus, but it doesn't seem to have anything to do with my eyesight.  Really weird tinnitus, like sometimes it'll get really loud, and then get quiet again.

I have the hissing noise almost 24/7... not when I move my eyes though...it's just there....it does stop once in awhile and wow what a relief..I can hear...

but sometimes..like at bed time...or evenings..it can get sooo loud that it drives me nuts.. it's horrible some of the time.

I don't know what to do to get rid of it..the Dr just add it to the report, I guess they don't feel it's that bad??  and I guess I don't really tell them it's driving me that crazy at times.

by the time you get yourself to the Dr there are so many symptoms to tell them about...hissing, just doesn't come up that often...

take care
