titanium rod removal in femur

by torijt, Oct 10, 2009 08:16PM
My son is 21 years old and 6 years ago he broke his femur and had a titanium rod put down the middle. It causes him pain to this day at the top and bottom of the femur besides the discovery that it is leaching metals into his body. He wants it removed and we want to know what we are looking at as far as trauma, recovery time and pain.

Hello!

Normally in males the long bones grow till 20 years and will surely have some pain and problems to cope with the rod.

The rod can be removed if it causes pain and other symptoms. Discuss with the surgeon who operated and go for a latest X-ray and go for the best course of action after that.

The recovery time would vary between 4-8 weeks if he does not have any complications.

Take care!
