Constant Neck Pain

Hi, I was diagnosed with mild degenerative disc disease a couple of months ago.  My doctor wasn't too concerned, which is good, I guess, however I am in constant pain with pressure in my neck and back of head.  I get headaches on occasion and do have an appointment with an orthopedic doctor next week.  My neck just really hurts all the time,  When I rotate it, I feel the muscles pulling and its making cracking noises.  My question is this......even though the DDD is mild, can it produce such excessive symptoms?  Thank you.
