My son's fibula

My son's fibula

My 15 year old son broke his fibula mid-shaft.  We went to Ortho today and the doctor said that he can have it wrapped in an ace bandage and walk on it.  It is slightly displaced and he says he sees this type of thing all the time and that it will be healed in two weeks time with no surgery.  I am completely shocked by this.  Is this normal?  Is it okay to walk on it?  The doctor is telling us he may get to finish out the football season.  I hope all this is true, but come on -it's broken!

Hi there!

Yes, it is absolutely fine to walk with a fibula fracture. The fibula is a non weight bearing bone of the foot and weight bearing does not matter for healing. It would hopefully heal in 4-6 weeks time.
Hope this helps.

Take care!
