epcondylitis

I was just diagnosed with epicondylitis.  I was told to limit activity.  I play the violin and refuse to stop.  What will happen to me?

Will I perhaps need surgery someday?

Thank you for your response.

Hi,
How are you? Epicondylitis usually affects on the lateral side and that too due to overuse. It is also called as tennis elbow. Lateral epicondylitis occurs most commonly in the tendon of the extensor carpi radialis brevis muscle at approximately 2cm below the outer edge of the elbow joint or lateral epicondyle of the humerus bone. Pain in the elbow and weakness in the wrist are the most common manifestations of this  conditions.
Rest is an extremely important part of the therapy, and without that the treatment is not complete. So, if you are not planning to give rest to your hand then surely the consequences would lead to surgery and very early. Conservative treatment includes rest, cold therapy, massage therapy, ultrasound or laser therapy and application of brace. After pain subsides rehabilitation with strengthening exercises is very important.
All the best.
