Don't know what to think

Okay, so I know I have a large cyst in my left ovary. My periods have been really off from "normal" for quite some time. Last month my period was early and lasted longer then normal, but was not what I would consider overly heavy.

Fast forward to last night, I had a very sharp pain on my left side, but did not think much about because I have been having pain regularly in that area for a while now. So I go to the restroom a little later and thought I had started my period early again. The intial flow was bright red, but a short while later when I used the restroom again I had some large clots. (I don't normally get those until the 3rd day or so of my period.) After that it turned brown and extremely light. This morning there is practically nothing. (Still have the crampy feeling and full adomen feeling I have been dealing with for months though.) Can all this be caused by my cyst? Could this have been from the cyst leaking or something? Or am I just being paranoid and it is just my period continuing to act wonky? Any advice/help you can give would be appreciated!!

Cyst are not uncommon. Most cyst will go away within a cycle or two, so unless the cysts are rather large (more then 5 cm) or suspicious on the ultrasound then waiting is usually the appropriate course. I know that is very hard, but having a surgery you really do not need is even worse.

Hello everyone.  I can't tell you how glad I am to find this forum with women experiencing the same problem as I am.

I saw my gyn on Monday, had an ultrasound and phone call on Tuesday to say I have more than one cyst on right ovary.  I had been having some discomfort in my lower right side of abdomen.  No other symptoms.

I had breast cancer in 2000 so I am very concerned about the cysts.  My doctor said if it was her, she'd wait 6 weeks, have a second ultrasound, then make a decision if surgery needed.  My intuition tells me I need surgery.

If any of you have any ideas, please let me know.  Thank you so much.

It sounds like you are right on track.  It is such a shame that we have to live with the unknown for so long!  But, it sounds like you are grounded and know this process takes time.  Unfortunately, there is no way to know without a biopsy.  Odds are definitely with you that it is benign, regardless of your family history!!!  But, I truly agree with your approach in finding answers.  It is a great decision to only have a partial hysterectomy unless cancer is confirmed.  I have had many unwanted issues related to early surgical menopause.  In my opinion, it is definitely preferable to keep one or both ovaries if possible.

But, as you mention, you can't continue to deal with with pain!  That is unbearable!!  I am so glad you will be getting answers soon!  Please keep us updated on how you are doing!

Hugs,
Shelly

Thanks Shelly! My period did finally kick in the day after I posted this. Again though it was somewhat lighter than normal and lasted longer than normal.

With the extensive cancer history in my family I have discussed everything with my OB and I am having my a partial hysterectomy and left ovary and falopian tube removed on 4/13.(We tried to get a closer date, but have just been unable to work it out. Although, they have me down as a fill in if someone cancels. This date is still better than the first date I got.) Hopefully I will get to keep my right ovary, due to also having heart diease in my family, but I understand if this thing looks malignant it will have to go as well.

When I first got in to see my OB she was still on the wait and watch mind set (you know bc pills, etc.), but as soon as I discussed my family history she quickly switched gears. As you said, It was nice to actually have someone listen and take my concerns seriously. I try not to think to much about the fact that this could be cancer, especially because I know with my family history I have a greater chance of it being so, but sometimes I just can't help but thinking "what if?" (I think I have those same thoughts as you that it is cancer, but I do not want to acknowledge them, hehe. ;o) But I did push for a closer surgery date than I was originally given.)

I am just so over all the pain, the waiting and the not knowing!!! I am not really in a hurry for major surgery of course, but I am ready for the pain to be gone and to finally know once and for all what I am really dealing with here.

Oh...I am so sorry sweet girl....
The absolute worst thing about having these type of issues if wondering if your perceptions are real. But, I have to tell you that I had the exact same experience and it was in fact ovarian cancer. It is very possible it is not cancer.  But, when you have the clots and signs you have had it is a symptom of an imbalance.  Somtimes, that ends up being a malignancy and other times it does not.

Please trust your intinct and feelings.  Follow-up with your gynecologist and please don't doubt your perceptions!   Cysts do cause the feelings you are describing and most of the time they are benign and go away on their own.   But, sometimes, they do persist and do need surgical intervention. Only time will tell. But, regardless, please don't doubt yourself!  You know better than anyone else about how you feel!!!  It is a shame that our society does not encourage us to express this!  I know that I knew I felt I had ovarian cancer months before I was formally diagnosed!  You really have to trust yourself!!!!  What is there to lose if you don't???? NOTHING!!!!!  What is there to lose if you doubt yourself?  EVERYTHING!!!!!   Take care of yourself and trust your instinct!  It certainly can't hurt you!!!
