Laparoscopy, Hysteroscopy and D&C

Hi,
I have been advised for all 3 procedures. It all began when I used to get random tummy pains and everytime my GP would give me panadol and it would eventually go away in a week's time. This last time I had sharp pains on my right side and I asked my GP that I wanted to get to the bottom of it. So to check for my digestive organs and to make sure it wasn't an appendicitis, he recommended me for an ultrasound. My guess has always been an ulcer or a stone in one of the organs. The result was quite a surprise. Everything was ok but they found a cyst on my left ovary. 47x57x67mm in size. Then in a month's time I did another one, size was 45x65x57mm in size. Then I went to a Gynaecologist, she said 7cm and recommended a laparascopy and these extra two procedures. I was shocked and just heard a bit of something like cleaning etc. I did a CT scan again in a month's time, the cyst was still there. My concern now is I never had any issues with my period and I only googled up Hysteroscopy and D&C. I never have pain on my left side. Should I be doing just the laparoscopy to remove the cyst or should I also do the other two procedures? I am scared. Very scared. I want to trust my gynaecologist. I did not even go for a second opinion. Please help!

I'm glad it's behind you now. The pain your describing sounds like it's from the gas. You are probably tender where the doctor was working. When that gas resolves I bet you will be feeling better.  I don't like trying to wake up from anesthesia either.  Be good to yourself! My surgery is in a couple hours now.
Take care,

Thank You guys. I had my laparoscopy done yesterday. I did ask her about the hysteroscopy and D&C just before the surgery. Seems like she wanted to do those while I was already in General Anaesthesia. Since I did not want to fiddle with my uterus atm, I asked if I could do it when required in the future. She was ok with it.
Waking up from the surgery in recovery was the worst feeling. I wasn't even able to figure out everything, the doc came for a brief moment and said something. All I could figure out was that it was a chocolate cyst. I was given some pain relief meds, then asked to change then taken outside in a room where patients who had day surgery were waiting to be picked up.
Anyways yesterday was so difficult for me, I had my tummy bloated. It was not just bloating, I had pain on my right side of tummy. I had trouble lying down. The incision wasn't hurting but my tummy was hurting again on the right side. I had imagined pain similar to period pain. Today I was feeling a bit better until I lied down on the couch and my tummy and shoulders started hurting. Must be the gas. My back is getting sore and now I am afraid to lie down. Am hoping that this will be over soon. Also hoping that my original tummy pains don't come back.

Give your doctor or his nurse a call and have them explain everything to you to ease your mind. Typically when doctors schedule surgery (I've scheduled surgeries and I've worked in surgery) these procedures are all on the consent. In order for you to sign the consent you must be ok with the possibility of these procedures being done while you are under general anesthesia.  The most common pain post surgery is cramping and pain from residual gas used to inflate your tummy so the doctor can visualize the pelvic area. You will probably have some bleeding too. Sometimes the gas travels upwards causing some pain up to your shoulders. A little walking around to help expel the gas is normally suggested. If your doctor has to do a lot of work you may feel tender from that as well. My first surgery @ 17. I had cysts removed and he also excised endometriosis and adhesion all of which caused my pelvic pain.  I have polycystic ovaries and endometriosis that I continue to have treatment for. Make sure to ask your doctor about what you should expect post surgery. You may also be able to look up and view a laparoscopy online. This type of surgery is typically called the belly button or band aid surgery since that is where one of the small incisions is located.

I hope your doctor helps you to understand things better and comforts you. If your not getting the answers you need I would think about finding someone else to see.

Take care & best of luck

Welcome to the community. I personally would want to know the reasons for doing all these procedures. The cyst has actually shrunk some and may continue to do so especially since most ovarian cysts resolve on their own.. However, it is getting close to the size that could cause ovarian torsion so does need to be monitored. Also, what type of cyst is it? It may be a type that has to be surgically removed.

Did the ultrasound and/or CT scan show a thickened uterine lining or some polyps? Could that be the reason for the D&C?

As far as the ongoing tummy pains, it is possible that the cyst was not the cause. Some things that come to mind that can cause intermittent pain are h-pylori (the bacteria that causes ulcers), diverticulitis, endometriosis. Endometriosis can only be definitively diagnosed via surgery but some gynecologists do not have the skills to identify it nor remove it.

If you do end up having surgery, I hope your surgeon plans to remove just the cyst (cystectomy) versus the ovary since the ovaries produce hormones well into a woman's 70's for optimal health and well-being. Unfortunately, far too many women lose ovary(ies) and/or their uterus unnecessarily causing more harm than good. I wish I had revised my surgical consent form to not allow organ removal.

I hope this helps you ask the right questions and get conservative treatment that restores your health instead of causing a new set of problems. Please keep us posted on all this. Sending healing thoughts your way....

Thank you and Good Luck to you too. I am just scared at the thought of how much pain I'd be in when all of these are done together, also I don't have any menstrual problems or any other and that was why I was hoping maybe my body sid not need D&C and Hysteroscopy at the moment :( You sound so strong. I wish I could but as the hours are drawing closer, my heart has started beating faster. Thank You again.

Look into your uterus.  A D&C is done to clean up the inside of your uterus and a laparoscopy is simply a laparoscope (instrument) that allows your doctor to visualize your ovaries, outside your uterus, bladder and anything else in your pelvic area. A small 1 inch incision is usually done in your belly button and just above the pubic bone. It allows the doctor to see and use other instruments to fix whatever he sees thru these small incisions.
Im having a hysteroscopy myself Tuesday. I have had three others and I've had 2 laparoscopies. If I can help you or answer any questions please let me know. Good luck with your surgery!

Thank You for your response Belle. I can't see all of your comment though. I am trying to calm myself down but can not help feeling scared.

Hi Lomisa
Honey, don't be scared. It sounds like your doctor was watching and waiting to see if the cyst would resolve on it's own like many of them do. Sometimes they hang around and cause trouble like you described. Once the cyst is removed and you've had a few days to recover from surgery you should feel better. There may be some other things going on in there that the doctor can fix while he's looking around. The three procedures you mentioned are usually done together. A  hysterosocpy is where your doctor uses an instrument that has a camera so he/she can l
