Newly diagnosed with complex cyst and worried...

I am worried and just need someone to talk to....I just found out today I have a complex cyst on my left ovary (along with uterine fibroids) The cyst is 4.1x4.2cm When I was having my ultrasound done I saw a black egg looking thing and I asked the girl who was doing the test what it was and she said it was a cyst on my left ovary. Then later she was looking at something that what whitish in color and looked like it had veins or "fingers" on it and when asked what it was she said was my ovary (she did not say cyst). So I was kind of surprised that when I went to doc today he said radiologist said was complex cyst. I thought the ones that looked like an egg were simple...Now I am scared. I am 35 and have never (that I know of) had a cyst b4. Also I have never had an operation in my life! I am supposed to wait about 6-8weeks and then go back for another ultrasound to see if it is getting smaller, bigger, etc. If it is getting bigger or I guess doesn't get smaller then I might have to have it removed. Can anyone tell me if they have had theirs removed without being put to sleep? I am scared to death of that (or anything medical/operation related for that matter). Can you tell me ehat the surgery is like if you have not been out. Thank you to anyone that can help :)

Hi,
It's pretty standard that they wait to see if your cysts resolves itself after a few cycles so don't worry about that..If indeed you have to have surgery to remove it, it is usually a simple procedure -- and yes, you will be put to sleep. Why on earth would you want to be awake?? Not me.. knock me out thank you !

Also, it's not a bad procedure. Usually outpatient and you will only be in the hospital 5-6 hours total. It's called a laparoscopy. Three small incisions from belly button down. Recovery is only a few weeks. Very little pain, so try not to worry /

Good luck.....

I did not write a bad word on my last post but I am not sure why it came up as stars. I just do not want anyone to think I wrote something bad.

Thank you for your reply. That makes me feel better to know they can go away on their own. You also sort of answered another question I had but did not ask. With the follow up is it best to go right after your period or another time of the month to re-check this. I hope everything works out ok for you with the other issues you have. After I get this taken care of I have to deal with a 2" uterine fibroid. We would like to try to have another baby before it is too late but I guess all this has been interfering. Ugh why can't men get all this ****!? LOL.

I wouldn't freak out. I am 43, and I had a complex cyst with septations, solid and fluid filled, around 3.7cm, found on a pelvic ultrasound about 3 weeks ago. Yesterday I had another u/s, timed right after my period to check again on a thick uterine lining, polyp, and the cyst since they were already checking on the other things. It looked as though the cyst had disappeared. Sometimes you read or hear that complex cysts don't resolve on their own, but the tech said that isn't true.

On the first u/s, a different tech had a hard time seeing the left ovary (not unusual) and seemed to spend more time on the abdominal part looking at the ovaries than this tech did. This tech also had a hard time seeing the left, although she did manage to a little bit with the transvaginal, but also seemed to spend much less time on the abdominal portion. So while I'm not 100% convinced that it is gone, I don't think she would have said she couldn't see anything if she wasn't convinced.  I also know I ovulated on the left before that first ultrasound, which I thought left only a functional (fluid filled) cyst, but the tech said that was not true at all and a complex could occur, and that it wasn't true that complex and septated cysts never resolve themselves (sometimes you hear or read that). It appears that mine resolved on its own.

My provider (and the tech) seems more concerned about my thickened uterine lining and polyp than the cyst. It's hard to wait, but it's entirely possible that it could disappear by them. The only reason I had another u/s so soon was because of the other things, not the cyst. They were in no big hurry to jump all over the cyst and I would have had to wait 6 weeks if it was the cyst alone they were following.

Thanks for your replies. I am trying not to freak out too much. I have been looking at natural remedies online. I read somewhere though that you shouldn't do that for complex cyst as it could be a cancer and then if you make it go away then you could potentially die from it. That to me sounds dumb. I think that any natural remedy, if it did work would not cure anything cancer, only like dissolve tissue, etc that is not serious. Does that sound logical?

I also have a complex cyst on my left ovary, it is 5 cm.  They are sending me to a Gyn/Oncologist for follow up.  I am 41 so maybe due to my age.  The cyst was part solid and liquid.  If a cyst is only liquid filled it would be a simple cyst.  I had those in the past.  I am seeing the DR Friday next week to see what he wants to do.  I was told by my OB/GYN that he will do more blood work and probably a CAT scan and I may need surgery.  I know someone that had the surgery and they do a small cut by the belly button and then a small cut on the side of the cyst.  She it was not too bad, but they put her to sleep for it.  I have had a D&C, a c-section and last November had to have a c-section and a hysterectomy.  The first two surgeries were easy the last one was a pretty complicated hysterectomy and I had to be cut from my belly button down.  That one was awful!!  I would think from what I heard about this surgery it should be a piece of cake.  I would not worry too much about surgery.  Just make sure you follow up with this and if you think you should get a second opinion. I am just scared of course that it could be cancer.  Although the odds are small.  Good luck to you an Limarie!!

Hi and welcome!! I am new here and I also have a 4cm complex cyst but mine is on my right ovary. I have only had one medical procedure that I was put to sleep for and that was a D&C and that was back in 1991 I was 17 yrs old (I am 35 now also) and it went ok I woke up with a sore throat because the tube down my throat but all in all it was not too bad. It was a great way to catch up on my sleep!!! I slept for a whole day it seemed like!!! ;o)  I also had a CSection with an epidural and that was weird!!! I could "feel" what they were doing. Not really feel it but I could feel the pressure especially when my son came out. I felt absolutley no pain tho!!! I could just feel them poking and proding around in me. Which was really weird.

I will see a surgeon on the 7th to have him formally go over my reults ( i requested a copy of my results from my medical records so I know everything I just don't know what it all means)  So I am sitting here in the dark still, glued to these boards asking question after question hoping these wonderful ladies are not gettiing sick of me!!!! ;o)

Best of luck to you!!!
