Hi.. ok... I had a 15cm cyst back in 1996 that needed to be surgicly removed... (was not on any BC)
Had baby 1999
Got diagnosed with pcos (poly cystic ovary) in 2001/02
Had baby 2006
First time ever taken contraception is 2007 where i had the implant put in my arm. And now the present time which i still have the same implant in. They found a Simple cyst measuring 3.4x3.6cm on my right ovary. I had the scan done on easter sunday, and i started my period friday. (i wonder if that was my egg?) I don't understand ..
Been suffering with pain since november 2007 (had implant put in august 2007), It is mainly when i have orgasm.
I have to go back for another scan in 2 months, so i guess that will be June.. ?
I have just got of BC for three months to try and get rid of my cysts. its worked to get them off my ovaries but it seems i still got them on my uterus.
I still had pain while on BC and was worried that cysts were still forming on my ovaries. the nurse sad even on BC you still ovulate, but a follicle doesn't mature so you just don't drop an egg. confusing i know!
anyways, I don't know if the implant in your arm would stop cysts like the BC pill is supposed to. it might work different.
before I started the BC the dr thought I had a tumor on my right ovary. he wanted to take the ovary out. i freaked out as i have been trying to have a baby again after having a miscarriage. he said to wait two weeks then go back. when i went back in two weeks, to the Drs surprise, it was gone. turns out it was a huge cyst that ruptured and not what he thought it was. unfortunately cysts kept on coming back and i was in constant pain, they were also interfering with ovulation, that's why i ended up trying the BC for the three months.
are you getting cysts often, or was it just this one that burst? if you are getting them often then you might want to talk with your Dr and see if changing birth control would help. taking the pill is a pain I know, but it might help with stopping cysts if you keep on getting them.
as for the kind of cysts it was... if it was a functional cyst like what Sandymac mentioned, then it only gets that big when the egg is not released at O. it continues to enlarge instead of releasing the egg. I am sure this is what happened to me when it got so big the Dr thought it was a benign tumor.
This is what should happen with a functional cyst... after AF usually one follicle matures. as the egg is released at O time, a cyst (functional cyst) forms and produces progesterone. if the egg is fertilized then hCG is released and this tells the cyst to continue to produce progesterone. this cyst is what keeps the embryo alive until the placenta takes over making the progesterone. if the egg is not fertilized then the cyst usually is absorbed by the body. and AF arrives again. but as I said this cysts can get large if an egg is not released.
my Dr could tell two different cysts the last U/S I had before going on BC. but then i guess they cant always tell what kind it is.
I am guessing that they want to do another U/S at some point to see if it is getting larger or smaller? what did the Dr say was the next step? as I said I had one so big he wanted to take my ovary out, then two weeks later it had ruptured.
How long have you had pain for?
The type of cyst you are referring to -- the one that forms each month is called a functional cyst. There are other types of cysts. For instance I am way past menopause, I no longer have a period and yet I had a cyst.
It depends on the size of the cyst if they consider removing it.Usually 5cm is the "line", above which they will consider removing it. That's not written in stone. Don't jump ahead too much. When will you be talking with your Dr.? Once he has the US he can better advise you..
