Ovarian Cyst/ Uterine Fibroids

Hi, I'm 20 years old and just recently in the past couple months, I was told I had an Ovarian cyst that ruptured and now have a folicle on my right ovary. I was also told I have a few Uterin Fibroids. My doctor told me I had nothing to worry about but I was quite insistent that something be done, because I have been living in pain for the past couple months. I'm wondering what the liklihood of having both cysts and fibroids is and what I should do about it. I am currently waiting for a referral to a gynocologist, much to my doctors not wanting to. The pain isn't pleasent to live with and I don't know what kind of questions to ask or what to expect...

Cysts and fibroids are extremely common disorders, unfortunately. I think our girl parts are all doomed to stir up trouble at some time in our lives. Having a gyn that you like and trust is a must-have for all women.

I'm 20 years old too!... and have both cysts and fibroids too! Check out my posts, it's pretty huge, but if you're wondering about your symptoms, being normal. We can compare. Read the first few, the rest is just me complaining. Hahaha.

Just don't let what I went through scare you... what I went through IS NOT a usual occurance. All the best, I hope the pain eases up.

My Mother had uterine fibroiods that were causing extreme pain, extreme bleeding and cramps during ovulation and the time her period was coming around.  She ended up having a hysterectomy 2 years ago at 42 years old.  She was living with this for SO long and they couldn't do anything about it until they noticed that one of the fibroids were the size of a 15 week fetus and was still growing.  They don't like doing anything about fibroids until something does need to be done.
I've had a cyst on my left ovary since I was 15 (maybe earlier) during my first pelic exam.  I've been living in pain for YEARS.  So much pain I couldn't even stand up straight.  I've had 3 pregnancies and during the pregnancy, the pain was gone.  But once having the babies, it came right back.  I was told to get a IUD to hold off getting my tubes tied in April of 2009.  Almost 2 weeks ago I rushed to the ER for those same pains and bleeding.  They did a pelvic exam, Ultrasound and x-ray to see if my IUD was still in place. During my Ultrasound, I had fluid surrounding the IUD from one of the cysts rupturing and bleeding.  I had the IUD pulled and the pain is GONE!!!  I know its only temperary.  My 3 Aunts, my Mother and Grandmother (all on my Mom's side) have had full hysterectomies or partcial due to abnormal uterus', fibriods or cysts.

I don't know if they can doing anything, like I said.  They can't do anything about the cysts or fibroids until they've grown so much (like tumors) then they're likely to do a hysterectomy.

My doctor told me my cyst will just keep doing what its doing, but having that IUD has help SO much!  Advil doesn't help the pain you're talking about, I know!!  Neither does laying down and I can't do that anyways with the four kids running around (set of twins)....

I wish you luck and everyone is different.  We're not doctors on here, just normal women going through the same thing you're going through.  If it gets TOO BAD!  Go to the ER and have them do a ultrasound again to make sure nothing is growing too large and ask for pain meds!!  Good luck

HI and welcome to the forum.  I'm sorry you are in so much pain.  It is common for women to have ovarian cysts (we get them every month when we ovulate, but they usually dissolve on their own).  I'm not sure about a fibroid, but I have seen that many women post that they have one.  You are very smart to ask to be referred to a gynecologist.  Sometimes, our PCP don't understand exactly what we are going through.  Here are a few questions I suggest you ask your gynecologist:

1.  What kind of cyst do I have?
2.  What is the size of my cyst?
3.  What are my options since I am in so much pain?
4.  Would birth control pills help resolve my cyst?

Those are the main questions that I always ask (besides #4 because I already know that birth control won't help me).  Most doctors will want to remove a cyst that is 5cm or larger unless they are complex (part fluid and part solid) or are causing a lot of pain.  Please push for for this referral.  If he is so resistant, are you sure that they are working on the referral?  You could always call your insurance company and ask them if there is a gynecologist in your network that you can go to without a referral.  Don't just let this pass.  Nobody knows you body better than you do! If you feel something is wrong, it probably is.  Keep in mind that he squeaky wheel gets the oil.  Please let us know how you are doing.  Good luck!
