another ovarian cyst...

5 years ago i had my left ovarie removed due to cysts growing around it so they decided to take the ovarie out. I have recently had pains again on the other side only to go to the doctor to find out i have a 6cmx3.5cm cyst on my right one.  I asked him  what he was planning and he said to try and save some of my ovarie so i would not need a hysterectomy as i am only 36 years old. The only problem is is that he has said that if he cannot save the ovarie he will not perform the hysterectomy at the same time......... not sure how this is going to affect me? if coming out of surgery i am told again that i need another operation, will this affect me? Would it not be best to have it done if i am already in surgery, and not to go through it all again in a month??? And if he does manage to leave some of the ovarie is there a large chance that i could get another cyst in a couple of years and have a hysterectomy anyway????? Any advice from anyone would be well appreciated.

When I  had to have my ovary with a complex cyst removed I signed a form giving my gyno permission to do a hysterectomy if one needed to be done. I was also having issues with having irregular cycles ( having two a month..). She told me that it would only take a little bit to find out the pathology report and she would know the answer while I was still on the operating table and would decide on the hysterectomy once she got an answer from pathology. Lucky it was benign and everything else looked good to her. She did not want to do a hysterectomy on me either because I am still  young (38).

Now before we did the surgery she told me that it if i wanted the hysterectomy done she would go ahead and do it since I did not plan on any more kids. The reason for the surgery was the 4.5cm painful complex cyst and irregular cycles. My cyst had grown from 2cm to 4.5cm in 2 months time. My husband had a vesectomy and we are quite happy with one child (15yr odl) . But she recommended to wait and see what she found before just doing it. You need to really have a in depth discussion with your doctor..

It could be that he wants to know the pathology of the cyst before he looks at a hysterectomy.  Have a heart to heart with him and ask about having a gyn/onc on call to do a biopsy while you are on the table so that you can have one surgery only.  Do keep in mind that over 95% of all cysts are benign.  Yes, there is still the possibility of additional cysts if a remnant of the ovary is left behind.  Good luck and keep us posted.
