That is strange. I had a laparotomy recently done (Feb 09), incision was from belly button to the pelvis. They used glue on my incision and told me I could shower after 24hrs and it did not require any type of banages or gauze. I used Vit E gel and I can say it has worked wonders.

I guess surgeons are different.

What type of surgery did you have - laparoscopy or laparotomy? I had a laparoscopy and waited several days to remove the Tegaderm (looks like Saran Wrap covering the stitches). If you're still working on the gauze, you can gently wet it and pull it away. It will probably be uncomfortable but no worse than a bandaid. Under the gauze should be another protective coat (like Tegaderm) and then stitches. There's no danger of everything falling out. But once you get the gauze off, be sure to dry the area gently. A warm, damp wound will be prone to infection. Please do not use Hydrogen Peroxide. It bubbles up and looks like it's doing a good cleaning job but it's quite irritating to the skin and incision.
