Thanks for the support everyone.
I am on the USA and I have been doing alot of my own research since my dr has been so unenlightening. I did write down a list of questions to ask her pre op
Such as recovery time her response 1 day and you will be fine -
How long will my belly remain swollen her answer it won't be swollen
Those are just a couple examples which have proven to be wrong and from I have read on line I am not unique.
I had questions written down to ask her when I finally reached her post op and was never able to get through them all - such as was pathology scheduled
I plan on calling her again today.
I am still bleeding not sure if thats normal? It's been since Monday
Thank you all I really appreciate having people talk with about this!
I've just read your post Slinkky and am shocked by the level of care you got. Its simply unacceptable. I hope you are recovering well. My own consultant is a bit overbearing and made me feel stupid when I first enquired about my dermoid. Its wise to have a list of questions made out beforehand and definitely insist on getting referred to another doctor. you need to be informed at every stage, I wish you all the best, Libmum
I had a bit of brown blood the following day, then came on my period 4 days later, it lasted 5 days, it was early than normal and lighter than normal!
Thanks for the kind words!
I will try calling her again for to ask those questions and seek out a new dr.
Does anyone know how long the bleeding usually lasts.
Hi There, so sorry you have had to experience this, surgery for one isnt nice to go through, and to have doctors/surgeons behave this way must make things 10 times worse. Where are you in the world? UK, USA or Oz?
You should demand a post op appointment, and they should definately test the dermoid. I am sure it protocol anywhere in the world to test all tissue/fluids removed from growths anywhere in the body. Normally benign cases take 1-2 weeks (here in the UK anyway) cancerous findings you are told within a couple of days of the operation. Sometimes they may do a frozen section during the operation, but I am guessing she didnt do that with you.
I had a laparoscopy back in November to drain a cyst (that didnt go away and they now think its a dermoid) which I am having out on Tuesday by open incision (c section cut) and whilst 14 weeks pregnant!
My experience of a laparoscopy wasnt painful, I had 3 stitches in my inch incision in my belly button, I took a peak at the wound the following day, still couldnt feel a thing. Only pain I got was gas pains in the chest, but these were bearable and I didnt take pain relief as that made me constipated (TMI). Stitches started to hurt after 3 days when they tightened, but then when they were took out it was fine. I bleed slightly after the operation, then I had a full period the week after, which was a week earlier than normal. I went home the same day of the operation, had 2 weeks off work to recover, but felt totally fine after a couple of days. Then had a bit of bruising form around my belly button. Just take it easy, relax and rest. Phone your doctor back in a couple of days and arrange a post op appointment, this will be mainly to discuss your results, I went back after 6 weeks. But pathology of the fluid was back in a week of the operation and I did have to phone and chase for the results.
Most dermoids are 98% benign, especially in pre-menupausal women. So odds are in your favour.
Best wishes and hope you start feeling a lot better soon, best wishes Yvonne
Welcome to the forum! :) Oh my goodness! I am so sorry! The treatment you have received is totally unacceptable!!! You should call the office and insist on a post-op appt and ask about the pathology that is being done on your cyst. Don't let her aggressive attitude make you shy away from getting the answers you need. You should make a list of your questions and let the nurse know the situation. After your post-op, I would file a complaint with the medical group and detail the treatment you received. It truly is unacceptable! I would then find another doctor to handle your care in the future.
The general timeline is that you should have a post-op appointment in 2-3 weeks and be sure to watch for any signs of infection (redness, warmth of incision, extreme pain). Rest and take it easy. Don't lift anything until you get the all clear. You need to heal from the inside as well as the outside.
If you continue to have high levels of pain, then please don't hesitate to go to the ER and get a fresh opinion. It is truly terrible that you have received this type of treatment! Hang in there!
