Pregnancy afterwards

Hi all!

I wanted to know if a pregnancy can occur after removing my left ovary and tube and also removing multiple cyst from my right ovary?
At the young age of 18 i was diagnosed with ovarian cyst, on both ovaries. I went to the gyno with my mom and the doctor walked in said "you are having surgery" and then pretty much walked out. I thought to myself "thats it? i have no options?" Obviously i would go home crying and thinking the worst. I had bilateral cystectomy.

A couple years later i went to a different doctor. It had been a while since i had an ultrasound and followed up on my ovaries. I regret not doing something sooner. I went and had an ultrasound and discovered i had a 15cm cyst on my left ovary and another one on my right( I dont recall the size of that one). The doctor basically told me i needed the surgery with no other option. I went in for the surgery in September 2012. For this surgery i did have the ovary and tube from the left side removed and the cyst on the right side. ( I always form cyst for some reason). This surgery shattered me. I didnt want to hear the word baby from anyone or hear my mom ask me when am i going to be a grandmother?

After this surgery i did follow up with the doctor on a regular basis. About a year ago I started on birth control, the original pill the doctor started me on didnt do much. Actually the cyst grew in size, about 6 months later in December of 2015 he  changed the pill and it decreased in size. I now finally made the appointment and went in last thrusday 7/28/16. i was obviously nervous, i had the ultrasound and the doctor informed me that the cyst grew in size (about 4cm more) and said that we'll follow up in about three months and if it grows i'll have to have surgery. At that point i felt the tears building up but i had to pull myself together. my mind went blank and whatever i could've or needed to ask the doctor went out the window. The thought of another surgery scared me, even more so that it would be the third surgery on the right side. With removing the cyst the ovary will decrease in size and i could not help but think that my opportunity to have children will go out the window as well.

I am now waiting for the 3 month appointment to follow up on the ultrasound and see what happens. I stopped taking the pill because i want to have a child. Thats why i want to know if it anyone knows from experience if i can have a baby?

Thank you

I had a (dermoid) cyst removed during my c-section with my second child. It was the size of a grapefruit and we didn't know it was even there. They had to remove the left ovary along with the cyst. Dr said my fertility shouldn't be affected, as all you need is one ovary, and it will ovulate every month, in place of the missing one.
Sure enough, my cycles were always normal after that. Period and ovulation were like clock work.
We started trying to gett pregnant in October of 2014. I started having pain in my right side around that time. Ultrasound showed another, smaller, dermoid cyst on my right ovary. I was very worried that the cud would take over and I would lose that ovary too. I didn't know whether it was better to have the cyst removed or keep it, and continue to try for a baby.
I was not getting pregnant and was about to make the decision to have surgery on the cyst, when I finally got pregnant 17 months after I started trying. I don't think the cyst is why it took so long to concieve...I had an hsg done and got pregnant soon after.
Do what is best for you concerning removing the cyst, but just know that it is MORE than possible to get pregnant with one ovary that has a cyst on it!!!

I'm sorry you've been through all this! Since you have one ovary or at least part of one, pregnancy is possible although it may be more difficult. Of course, you will want to watch this current cyst carefully and not let it get too big so it can be removed easily enough without obliterating your ovary.  But then again, you don't want to undergo surgery unnecessarily due to risks including formation of scar tissue (adhesions) that can cause problems including infertility. In my opinion, 3 months seems a little long to wait for another ultrasound.

Hopefully, your gynecologist has excellent cystectomy skills if you do end up needing surgery. You may want to consult with a reproductive endocrinologist / fertility specialist if your current doctor is not one.

Best of luck to you and please keep us posted.
