Complex ovarian cyst, odd lab results and a crazy Doctor??.

Okay, so I am set for surgery tomorrow to remove a 5.3 cm complex cyst on my left ovary tomorrow.  And I am so confused!   The cyst was found last year after a miscarriage, at that time it was 2.2 cm and my hormones were normal.   I'm 43 by the way.   Now the cyst has grown to 5.3 cm and is causing all kinds of pain.   So first the doctor checked my FSH and LH levels in Aug as I hadn't had a period since May and had all the pregnancy symptoms along with faint positive pregnancy (I have a history of faint positive/negative pregnancy test till I'm 2.5 months I say it's the blood pressure pills I take which are a drastic).

So in Aug I had some spotting after the doctor gave me progesterone but no period, then an ultrasound which found the left ovarian cyst now larger (right is perfect and had a follicle on it at the time) and lab work.    My labs came back with an FSH level of 41 and an LH of 18.  My doctor was confused he said the FSH shows I'm post menopausal but the LH shows I was ovulating (remember the follicle on the right ovary during the ultrasound), so he declared I was menopausal at 43 and may have ovarian cancer since the cyst has grown.   So after freaking out for a week, the 125 test came back within normal range.

Now this cyst was only hurting a bit at the time of the ultrasound, now I can hardly sit or walk most of the time and am off work.  So I saw him on Monday for pre-op and I asked him about the metformin I was on being refilled as I also have PCOS.   He said no as my ovaries (not sure why he included both in there) aren't working as I'm in menopause. But as I was telling him about the horrible pain I was in he looked so confused and got me up on the table.   He couldn't touch my left side without it sending pain through my body.  He asked if I was having any other issues, I said since you took me off the metformin my hair is coming out by the handful, my chin acne is back full force and hair is rapidly growing in places it should not be!!   He says that can't be possible, as if I'm in menopause than neither they cyst should have grown nor should my hair be falling out etc.    So he says we will take the cyst off, but if its too big we may need to think about taking out the uterus.   WHAT???

Okay, now I'm confused!!!!!!   Why would he want to do that???

You are very welcome, lilbunnyfufu03.  I really glad your surgery went
well.  I'm in menopause. It's not that bad. Sometimes I get hot flashes
and something called night sweats, but at least I don't get those painful
menstrual periods anymore. So it's a type of trade off. I hope you feel
better soon.  Eve

I understand just how scared you must have been.  Luckily I was able to get away with just the cyst on the left and a cyst on the right being removed.   I just can't imagine having a hysterectomy at my age especially when it's not giving me any problems.

Was yours causing you any issues before they removed it??   Or was it just because your 125 came back high so he removed it to be on the safe side?

Thanks again Eve.   Surgery was done and went well.   He aspirated the complex cyst on the left side and then did a small cyst on the right.  I seem to be healing up okay, although I am still very sore, I think this is due to the fibromyalgia I have just prolonging things as usual.   I seem to be still VERY bloated though, not sure what that is about.   I go in for my follow up next week so I am hoping at that time I can ask for a copy of the surgery records to see exactly what he did and saw.

So the metformin was/is for the PCOS I have.   I will be asking for it back on my follow up visit.   But I am sure he will have me go do some more blood test to see if they still come back showing I'm in menopause.   Rather crossing my fingers I am not as it is just so early to be going through that already.

I had a cyst too a few years ago, on one ovary, that grew larger. The ca 125 came back elevated. So I had surgery to remove that one cyst, also removed the uterus cuz my doc thought it was a good idea. If it turned out to be cancer, he would have removed everything. The recovery was long and painful, so you might want to weigh both pros and cons. My pro is definitely not to have my period anymore. Cons are, it was painful and long recovery, I have five ugly scars on my abdomen and I feel it just wasn't really necessary to do. It's like the surgeons just want to make more money, as always, and they're mostly trained in removing the uterus, not just an ovary. In hindsight I should have insisted on just doing a biopsy, but back then I was so frightened it might be cancer I just couldnt think straight.

Hello libunnyful03,

Just finished reading your post. I'm sorry to say this but after reading your
comments, I can understand why you're feeling confused. You say you
have a cyst on your left ovary which has grown.  Okay, the doctor says
he is going to remove this cyst on your left ovary. But you stated your
right ovary is perfect. So why would the doctor say he might be taking
out your uterus. This doesn't sound right to me.  Now wonder you're
confused. Why are you on metformin ? Personally, if I was dealing with
a doctor like this, I would cancel the surgery. I wouldn't want a confused
doctor doing surgery on me. This is just my opinion. I don't think this
doctor sounds competent. This is not a medical opinion, it's based on
the comments you've shared. I would get a second opinion. I personally
wouldn't have the surgery performed by this doctor. I know it's Wednesday
already. I only read your comments today. If you've already had the surgery
I wish you the best in your recovery. If for any reason your surgery has
been delayed, I think I would get a second opinion. Eve
