24 Weeks Pregnant and Placenta Previa

Hi All,

I'm 24 weeks pregnant today and I was diagnosed with partial placenta previa at 11 weeks.  I'm seeing both my regular OB and a perinatologist and they were both very hopeful that it would move up as the uterus started to grow more (said it had a 90% chance of moving up).  However, at my 22 week ultrasound it still had not moved up at all.  I had another ultrasound this week and again it still hasn't moved up.  My OB told me this week that if it doesn't move up, they will schedule me for a c-section at 37 weeks.  I can live with this and am even looking at the posiitves of having an early c-section...I know exactly what day he is coming and I get to meet my little man in person earlier!  I am scheduled for another scan at 28 weeks and they will probably know more at that time.

I was just wondering if anyone out there has experienced something similar and had the placenta move up and out of the way after 24 weeks?

Thanks for your reply:-)

I'm kind of just planning on the c-section at this point.  I could kind of tell by the way my OB was talking that she doesn't have a ton of hope that its going to move up enough to have a vaginal birth.  Oh well...someone told me yesterday that babies are prettier when they are borm via c-section so one more thing to add to the "positives" column:-)

Ahhh...I'm 37 weeks now and would LOVE to be able to deliver at this point! You'll get to skip the final miserable stuff now that seems to really be setting in now LOL! I'm jealous! As I'm pretty terrified of having a vaginal birth in general, I'd sort of prefer a c-section, truth be told. My doc does not seem to think that will be in the cards for me, BUT because I've had bad iron issues for a while, I've been told I ought to be prepared to have a non-medicated birth unless my levels miraculously rise. I was really counting on that needle! Good luck!

Thanks Jennie!  There's positives to everything.  I'm sorry about the non-medicated birth.  I'll say an extra prayers tat your iron levels go back up and you can have the epidural!  I know if I am able to end up going the vaginal route, I'll be all about the epidural!

My pregnancy for my little girl resulted in placenta privia and my placenta did not move. It just layed there thus my OB put me on complete bedrest due to the occurance of spotting blood. She was born completely natural with help of some meds. So I am not quite sure why your doc is just opting for the c-section.

Jennie, If you walk it helps with an easier delivery when having no medication. It may help you to absorb iron easier when you consume foods high in iron along with foods high in vitamin C. When a person is anemic at times the reason is because of low vitamin C as well. Try having a combo of fruits and veggies instead of a meat product, they are easier for your body to obsorb. However, vaginal birth at first seems to be scary for all of us. Honestly, after the pain of delivering is gone, its all forgotten with the presents of your baby in your arms.

My sister in law had placenta previa that did not move up.  She did wind up having a c section at about 37 weeks and my nephew is now a healthy and happy 7 year old.  Everything went well.  My understanding is that if the placenta is going to move up, it typically does happen before 20 weeks.  At least most of the time.  However, nothing to worry about either way!  I also delivered by c section for other reasons.  Neither my sister in law or I had any problems with infection or anything else, and both of our boys are perfectly fine.  Congrats on your pregnancy!

Thanks for the words of encouragement seasoned mommy! I've probably been not eating enough vitamin c with the iron for absorption purposes...I'll work on that for sure. Hopefully that will help some...

So glad for you, Hoping...I know you had been trying for a while. You'll have your baby sooner than you think! :) 37 weeks will sneak right up on you...

Thanks so much for the encouragement!  It really helps to know that others have been through the same thing and had no real issues and healthy babies.  I haven't ahd any spotting yet, but my OB told me if I did, I would be put on bed rest.  She said that as I get closer to the 3rd trimester, the chances of spotting with previa start to increase.

@Seasoned_mommy...my OB is planning a c-section if the placenta doesn't move up, because my placenta is actually covering a portion of cervix.  If it doesn't move up, it will be blocking my baby's "exit route" so to speak...lol.  She also said because of its location there is an increased risk that if I go into labor, the contractions can cause the placenta to seperate from the uterus and cause hemmoraging.

@Jennie1211..Thanks so much!!  We had been trying for quite some time and he was conceived on our last IVF attempt, a FET!  He was our one remaining frosty bean!

Hi, I was also diagnosed with this on March 22.  I am now 24 weeks. Had another ultrasound April 9th, still hasnt moved.  Im still hopeful that it will move up, but if I have to have a c-section, I completely understand. This is my first pregnancy so its kind of scary.  keep me posted.

I go a week from today on April 20 for my 28 weeks scan.  If the placenta still hasn't moved up, I think they'll schedule me for the c-section at 27 weeks.  This is also my first pregnancy and yes it is all a bit scary, but if the worst case scenario involving the previa is I have to have a c-section, that's not so bad at all:-)  I'll definitely keep you updated.

Sorry...I meant they'll schedule me the c-section at 37 weeks not 27 weeks.  I'm 27 weeks now, and I'm obviously having "pregnancy brain"...lol.

My name is Misty and I wanted to tell you my story during my second pregnacy I had placenta previa that went undetected until i was 33 weeks. i started having this pain and i could tell something was wrong I went to Er and they admitted me for a kidney infection well three days later I went home and that night the pain came back well I went back to the Er this time I was bleeding and couldn't move the pain was so bad. well 4 hrs of being in the er they finally did an ultra sound and found that my placenta ruptured a week before and I was hemmoraging inside the uterus my baby was swallowing blood and was really sick they did an emergancy c-section which wasnt that bad but when my daughter was born she had weighed four pounds but when they suctioned all the blood from her belly and lungs she only weighed 2 lbs 6 oz thank god i was a hospital with a great prenantel facility she survived and is now a very healthy 12 yr old. she out grew the preemie stage within three months. So since you have been diagnosed already with PP know that the first sign of pain of any kind get to the dr and have a scan done...
