I went today to get my first sonogram. I am 38 years old, will be 39 when I deliver. The technichian said my eggs are OLD and my chances are very great in having a baby with down syndrome. I just want to CRY!!! I have so much anxiety!!!!

If my tech would have said something like that, I would have gone to the Dr. It reflects on the whole office when someone is out of line like that. The Dr can speak to her about ettiquette of talking to patients. My intention is not to get someone in trouble but to prevent those feelings in other patients and improve the reflection of the office. The Dr can let you know if this is true but also give you the statistics instead of the doom and gloom. He/she will be monitoring the pregnancy so that's is who I would rely on.

At 10 weeks u can have the harmony test done and it is very accurate and also tells you ur baby's gender :)  I had it done and my baby is healthy and I'm 39 yrs old.  its likely that your baby is healthy!

Thank you everyone for your support and advice. I am trying not to worry, but its hard. Also the technician went on to say most down syndrome babies end with a miscarriage, and thats the body way of getting rid of the bad embro. Then she said sometimes the body won't reject it, then you have a choice to get an abortion.

That's such a discouraging thing to say! Your eggs are exactly the same age as every other 39 year old. My mom had my sister when she was 43, my friends mom had her daughter at 49 and they were both fine! Good luck!

I am 39 and I am having a healhy baby girl. 75% of all down syndrom children are born to mothers of average age. Yes your risks go up slightly but if you are really concerned first relax...take a breath stress and anxiety won't help you or the baby. 2nd educate yourself with FACTS, don't rely on a tech having a bad day or an opinion about ama moms. 3rd once you are educated understanding both genetic family history and true odd, if it is still important for you to find out get testing there are several minimally invasive tests to choose from that you can consider.

This is a joyous occasion you are only pregnant with this child once, make it as stress free as possible being ama poses some areas to be mindful of but in most cases I am seeing most of us having the usual discomforts of pregnancy but nothing that has made me feel like I am making a mistake. I am truly enjoying this pregnancy!

You do the same! Enjoy your very special chapter!

That was a horrible thing to say!!! I'm 39 turning 40 in August and due August 2 and everything is going great. Stay positive!! My sisters had babies at 38 and my mom had me at 40 and we are all healthy. Sorry you had to go through that.

That person is a tech. . Not a doctor.  Of all the dumb things to say to a pregnant woman,  this is by far the dumbest.  Your risk goes up and our eggs are older but chromosomal anomalies can happen at any age.   Please speak to a specialist to calm your fears.   I just told my husband who is a doctor what this person said to you and he thinks the tech isn't normal.

I agree tech is a moron! I'm 41 and just gave birth to identical twin boys om March 12. Btw they were naturally conceived also, so age has zero to do with anything unless you are like 70!!.all the best tp you and stay positive

Go see a genetic counselor family history has lots to do with it. Also get the harmony test we got the results at 13 weeks. Its just a blood draw.

My aunt had 2 babies after age 35 and 2 more after age 40. All completely normal and healthy. Yes, your risk is higher than in previous years but it's also a better chance you get a completely normal child.

For one HELL NO you're not too old my cousin has an extremely healthy & smart now 2 year old and I'm due in May with zero problems.
You enjoy every second of this pregnancy as your little angel thrives. 40 is the new 30 ;)

Its 1% higher each year until 42 however once you hit 35,your risk is already at about 35%-40%.... But keep your hopes up my friend is 41 and just had a very healthy and happy baby boy!

Your tech is a moron! I am 40 due in June also had a baby at age 38 and saw a genetic specialist. I was told until age 42 your risk is only 1% higher unless it runs in either mom or dads family.
