Terbutaline Effect on Baby

My wife was on the injection form of Terbutaline for well over the FDA's 72 hour 2011 warning.  The drug was prescribed to prevent early labor back in 2010.  My daughter Anna is now 4.  She very active, personable, chatty, etc.; but she has virtually no appetite and weighs only 28 lbs, putting her well into the "Failure to Thrive" region for height and weight.  It is very difficult to get her to eat more than 800 calories per day.  While, there appear to be no cognitive effect presented, we don't know what the future holds.

Anyone else experience this weight issue?

Same here.  The pediatricians are only concerned about "failure to thrive" in the first 2 years, when the brain's cognitive abilities are developed.  After that, it's a crap shoot.  "Don't worry," they say, she's just little.   We'll continue to try to load her up with calories.

Thank you for your response!

Thank you so much for your comments.  I'll be taking Anna to Endocrinologist to determine if hormone therapy is an appropriate treatment per your advice.

Again, Many Thanks!!!

My daughter will be 4 in may and weighs 26 lbs soaking wet ;)

Doctors were concerned when she was younger but now just realize she is meant to be a small girl. I had to do monthly weigh ins. On days she doesn't eat enough she gets a pediasure drink or sometimes carnation good start. She thinks both are a treat since they are chocolate,  and are a good source for vitamins and calories.

As far as I know terbutaline does have effects on the baby but there is no documented evidence of it affecting a childs weight.  Ask your doctor or better yet pharmacist who knws their drug interactions and contraindications well, to see if they know anything.

Plus have your daughters pediatrician evaluate her gastric enzymes. It could be that shes not producing sufficient amounts of appetite regulating hormones.

In addition..May be you can gradually introduce calories in her diet and work it up to her required intake.

Hope all goes well. Goodluck!
