That can be a bad idea! only because if you dont hear anything you'll freak out and go to the ER when you don't need to (that is, if you are as paranoid as me). I was DYING to get a doppler but then I knew that if i didnt hear the heart beat(couldnt find it) i would freak out so i didnt do it. Now that the baby is moving ALL the time I don't need a heart doppler anymore.

My hubby and I purhcased a doppler at the 8 week mark and we loved it. It was a 3 mhz one so it was pretty much what they would use in your doc office. Some are more heavy duty that others. We heard ours at the 10 week mark but lemme tell you it took me a while to find the heartbeat. I had to literally push downwards on my pubic bone and face the thingy down twds my private area. My doc was not happy that I had it because she was afraid I would panic if anything went wrong...sure enough at about 16 weeks, the babys HB started to murmurr. Told the doc - she did not hear this murmurr right away in her office but when she did she sent us for a special ultrasound. It was wonderful knowing that I could have potentially prevented something :)   I also was not able to find the HB first thing in the morning and in the beginning, I had to have a FULL bladder to hear it well. I am now 22 weeks and use it almost never as I feel the baby now. The most amazing time to have it though was when I got shocked badly and freaked out - hubby and I rushed home as I was not feeling baby and sure enough the doppler put me out of mommy misery. :)   So there are pros and cons to them. Enjoy it though - we sure did !

I brought one few weeks ago and I am very happy with it. it such a relief to hear the heart specially because I still can't feel any movement. I think depends a lot in the model of doppler. some of them are not good enough to pick up the heart beat.

oh darn now i want to get one lol! but i think that by 22 weeks you should be able to hear your baby's heartbeat by ear right? i mean not you but your partner :-p

I barely use the doppler now that I am 22 weeks because I much prefer feeling the little kicks. :)  Just my opinion though.
