fear of cesearean

I am right now almost 6 months pregnant and even though they haven't said anything about needing a c-section...I am scared that they will have to do an emergency c-section and I will have to go under general anesthesia....this terrifies me because I don't want to be hooked up to all the monitors and the ventilator...I really have this thing about needing to control my breathing....my question is kind of silly.......since they have to put you on a ventilator for surgery does that mean your life hangs in the balance......why do they do that if not?  How can I not be so scared? I know that under general anesthesia that you are asleep and don't know it but that scares me even more to think I might never wake up.....and having to trust other people to take care of me...
I know that you "gently" go to sleep...I had a tonsilectomy at 6 and while the sleeping wasn't bad me being ripped away from my parents and screaming that I wanted to go home while they tried to get me to sleep was not what I would consider gentle...
I really want reassurance about surgery and not comments about needing counseling please...I am already in counseling

Well they did put me to sleep with mine at the end, but after I thought about it I think they just gave me a vial of morphine that made me loopy, and I think I did go to sleep, and the first section I had they just gave me epidural and it started wearing off, but I wasn't on a vent either way.

They didn't put me to sleep at all.  I was awake for the whole thing and got to bond as soon as the dr was done with her.

i had an emergency c-section and they did not put me under general anesthesia.  I think that you are thinking of a very rare case.  Please relax.  Even if you need one, c-sections are not that bad.  I did feel very tired at the end, but I didn't actually fall asleep because too much was going on.  I understand what hkenny is saying about bonding, but at the moment, I was so tired I really didn't mind.  I was glad for a couple of hours to rest before beginning the humongous task of mothering.

i have a fear of c-section as well. i just really dont want one, i want to be able to hold my baby after and bond. plus i have had hip problems since being born breech and my chiroprator said a vaginal delivery COULD fix my hip....aka they willl both spread so it is possible. I guess i just pray that i wont need one and that if i do its b/c the baby needed out!

I learn something new everyday...on all the baby shows I've seen, I never knew they put you to sleep at the end.  I always thought you stayed awake for all of it, unless your spinal or something wouldn't take before surgery and then they would put you to sleep to do the surgery.

They don't put you on a vent for a c-section, I've had 2. You are awake for almost the whole procedure, they do put you to "sleep at the end during the stiching and stuff but it is not for long, and you breathe on your own dear. Most likely you won't need a section anyways~ Don't stress.
