Anemic?

Hey Gals.  I'm currently 18 weeks pregnant with twins.  I had some routine bloodwork done and everything came back fine, except my iron levels which showed I'm anemic.  My doctor said I would need to start taking iron supplements twice a day to get my iron up, so she called in a prescription.  First question:  It says in the drug pamphlet to discuss the risks of taking it while pregnant.  Is this going to harm my babies?  I don't think my ob would prescribe something that would harm them, however, now i'm worried!  The second question is the iron is making me sick.  It's like morning sickness all over again!  Does anyone have a similiar experience or suggestions on how to beat the nasuea?  Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I think all mom's worry about anything that comes up during pregnancy.  Then you worry, after you have the baby/babies, about any minor illness that she/he/they get.  I think it's part of being a mom!
Keep in touch.

Thank you all for relieving my fears and letting me know it's common in twin pregnancy.  I feel a lot better!  We tried so hard for these babies for three years and finally through IVF were successful, that if anything that comes up I tend to worry about way too much!  I'll definitely try eating with the iron tablets to see if that helps!  Thanks ladies!

the iron supplements are perfectly safe in pregnancy.. but watch out they wiill increase your constilpation! so you might want to take a colace every once in a while as well! and it can turn your stools black too (the iron) all normal! : )   Its better to take the iron than not for your babies sake and as the other girls said its SUPER common in pregnancy, ESP with twins!!! i think all meds that you get say to discuss them with your dr during pregnancy as well! just a standard warning.. Congrats on the twins!!!!

My doctor put me on a prenatal with a good dose of iron from the get-go.  I find that if I take it at night, it is great because I go to bed and wake up OK.  I think it's better to be a little nauseous in the middle of the night than during the day!  I DON'T ever take it in the mornings!  I would also suggest (if you aren't already doing so) to take some kind of food right before or after eating it.  That REALLY helps with the nausea.  Most vitamins/supplements say to take some food with them, but just in case yours don't I'm letting you know that it helps.  Anemia is, supposedly, REALLY common with twins!  Don't know if any of that helps...

Hi, I am 18 weeks with twins also and just got prescribed iron supplements by my OB as well. Haven't bought them yet (thats my errand for today). He said anemia is quite common in twin pregnancies. I don't think they would recommend it if it was harmful so don't worry about that. Just make sure you take the proper dosage. I took iron years ago due to some slight anemia and I think it can be constipating but don't remember any nausea. I would talk to the Dr. if you are feeling that unwell, maybe the dosage is too much for you? I am to take 300mg once a day of ferrous fumerate. It does say online that an overdose can cause severe nausea. Hope you feel better.
