I'm actually due in October but there is a chance I may deliever in September like with my 1st. I stocked up a lot with my daughter and I brought different brands. I liked the Target brand and loved loved loved Kirkland Costco brand. I hated Walmart Brand but loved Luvs and Huggies. I would also say sign up online for Huggies Coupons and Publix (if its in your area) baby club. I also clipped coupons and watched for sales at Babies R US. I forgot about their brand. I once got 2 boxes for $30...I thought I was in heaven.
Since we are having our second baby we are going to buy the same as we did the last time, and yes, in advance!! We used Pampers diapers and Huggies Wipes (I like the texture and the shea butter). We tried all different kinds of brands and always seemed to go back to pampers. Really, with your first, I don't think I would buy to many in advance only because you personally might not like a brand's fit, or your baby might fight Lovs better than store brand, etc. I know for one thing, we LOVE Kirkland brand wipes from Costco as they are individually packaged and were great for travel, camping, in the car, etc. not sure if they sell those in the US, but they are awesome! (no bulky container).
Anyhow, since this is our second, we're buying the same as before and buying two boxes of each size. I can honestly say we never skipped over a size ever. And worst case, if you don't use them, you can return them and get a different one.
I would wait to buy diapers. Your baby may have an allergy to the brand you buy. Its better to save the money and try different brands. I loved Pampers with my 4 yr old but Luvs worked better for my 2 yr old. Another option is if you buy them just dont open them and keep the reciepts.
I definitely agree that pampers swaddlers are the best for a newborn but I have never tried luvs before and I doubt that I will this time around either... I always stick to what I know works and that is what I used with both of my boys.
Isn't it so hard to try and plan but to have to wait until that 12 week mark? I am beginning to panic about the amount of things that will have to be done and arranged by then, but I worry that if I start buying things now or planning too much, that I will jinx things and/or be even more devastated if something goes wrong.
StillTrying101 - I am also the main bread winner also and am trying to save as much as I can - I can take 6 weeks paid leave but the rest will have to be unpaid and I live in Manhattan where the cost of living (and childcare) is simply outrageous.
This thread was helpful for when that time comes - it sounds like pampers is the clear winner. I am also thinking of trying the g diaper - its like a cross between regular diapers and cloth diapers - there is an outside cotton cover (similar to the ones used for cloth diapers) but then you can buy biodegradable inserts to put inside and these can be thrown away or flushed. Has anyone heard of these or know anyone who tried them?
I've thought about it. I can see your boyfriends point, it probably does make sense to just save up the money, but if your like me, I'm better at buying stuff to stock up than actually saving money! I think I'm gonna stock up, or maybe even buy a extra giftcards to walmart/Costco so I know the money is there for both diapers and formula. I probably won't start that till i'm into my second trimester though. Right now i'm freaking about saving enough money so I can actually take a maternity leave and not stress over money the whole time I'm out. I'm the main bread winner in my house at the moment and my work offers NO paid maternity leave and sadly I don't have Short term disability either. I'm hoping to have 6-8K set aside so I can take two or three months off without worring about the money. The thought of saving that much money is daunting though!
I'm not on this forum but thought I would answer your post. With my daughter (18 weeks old now) we used the pampers swaddlers! LOVE THEM!! We had 2 boxes of Newborn we went through and then maybe like a small pack of them. :) Then we moved to size 1 and she has been in size one ever since.
I have never tried LUVS diapers so I can't speak on experience with that. I have tried HUGGIES and I HATE them!!! They leak so bad, pee or poo. Whichever for me. Even my friend who has a little boy 2 weeks younger than my baby and she can't stand them. We live by our PAMPERS. :) They are the best!!! Just thought I'd share! :)
Yeah I did the math and right now the Pamper Swaddlers came out to 22 cents a diaper and I only planned on buying one box of size newborn and then maybe two or three of size 1
First let me say, I buy luvs....they are cheaper and work great. I can get my luvs at Kroger for 24 cents a diaper as opposed to the STORE brand at 30 cents per diaper. But for the first month I prefer pampers swaddlers. When stocking up remember not to go over board. Baby will change diaper sizes quickly.
