Question- What is your opinion of Marajuana or Weed during pregnancy?

Ok, no one freak out or start yelling at me. I just want opinions... What do you think about weed during pregnancy to treat Nausea?

The reason I ask is I've been on SEVERAL midwife's sites that reccommend weed or marajuana as a way to help perk up the appetite. Not enough to get completely baked, but enough to relax you and help your appetite.  and YEA, I know it's illegal... but I'm one of those who think it should be legalized so that at least ppl won't be getting it laced or whatnot. (and it'll lose some of it's appeal to younger generations)

Also, my friend was talking to me today, and she had the same issues I've had with my pregnancy: Bad M/S during the first 1/2 of pregnancy, and lingering m/s or no appetite during the rest of her pregnancy. She had a problem eating enough and putting on weight.

Her NURSE at her doctors office suggested it to her, and she said it helped alot. And it turns out her mother also did it a little for the same reasons when pregnant with her. (like 2X a week or so only in the AM to boost hunger)

I have NOT smoked it during pregnancy, but have seriously considered it. Yes, I know the risks to MY lungs, but to my knowledge there have been NO studies showing harmful effects to the baby. and I've looked.

Very interesting article. Personally, I don't use the stuff, but this was great information in the event that my child ever decided to try it out. I also read some of the articles from the links. The one about the toxins degrading your lungs 20 years faster than regular smoking was interesting although smoking marijuana does not lead to cancer. It is like inhaling toxic fumes such as asbestos.

martikadragon - I don't think this is a good idea at all. Your body is designed to handle pregnancy a little differently than everyone else. I found an article that stated: "Studies have shown that children who were exposed to marijuana during pregnancy sometimes have problems focusing their attention and solving problems". It also affects milk production once the baby is born. So, if you are planning on breastfeeding marijuana can dry up your supply. Also, there is no way to know if the marijuana you have purchased is laced with other drugs such as PCP, which can be very harmful to your child.

I also came across some interesting reads from a doctor who has studied marijuana use in pregnancy. Her name is Melanie Dreher. You may try some research on her. Her studies are very interesting. Especially the part where in Jamaica women are not allowed to smoke marijuana rather they use it for medicinal purposes in tonics and teas. Her research is quite to the contrary of other findings.

what babyscience said. i just looked up and read a little on it. and some studies showed premature births and lower birth weight. i just dont think its fair. you really dont have much longer it wont be that hard. i know you can do it we are all miserable during some parts of our pregnancies! its the beauty of what our bodies are doing that should get you through those days. hang in there! and hey i know how ridiculous it is to legalize alcohol and make pot illegal, in my opinion alcohol is by far the most dangerous drug i have ever seen anyone use. but the powers that be have their reasons right? lol

It is up to you but I have found articles that said it can cause mc and cause problems later in life for males around puberty...they are smaller and don't produce adequate testosterone to create a fully male look.  Personally, after having a mc, I have realized how precioius pregnancy is and I would NOT do anything which might cause any problems...I would give anything to be prego right now and have no appetite etc.  Like Joy said, there isn't a lot of research out there about it and pregnancy because who would want to take part in something that could hurt their baby.  Good luck, sorry you feel nauseous...it is one of the worst feelings in the world!

I think its all down to personal choice, they havent found any medical evidence to prove it as harmfiul. They say thesedays that basically everything is harmful in pregnancy but if we were to stick to these rules we would be wrapped in cotton wool.

Im 30 weeks 2 days and i will admit im still smoking. Ive cut down from 20 a day to 2/3 a day, 5 at the weekends. I know its not classed as being "right" but my midwife advised that its better to cut down gradually than go cold turkey as the stress of withdrawal could do more harm than good to the baby.

I also eat fresh smoked salmon and the occassional portion of prawns.

I didnt know i was pregnant until i was 2 months gone and i drank loads smoked loads and had a really unhealthy lifestyle which i felt really guilty about but i know my baby is fine and i think that so long as you look after yourself and eat healthily then you should be fine

im all for it actually its not like your smoking it all the time i do NOT smoke it, but i see how it could benifet (sp?) lil tj by making you have more of an appetite. once or twice a week maybe one lil puff would be fine i think just my opinion tho.

I wasn't doubting your knowledge on anything, and wasn't trying to offend anyone. But in mu own opinion, I would much rather take a prescription medication like Phenergan to help with nausea. I also have no apetite, and at 23 weeks pregnant I have only gained a whopping 1.5 pounds! So I do what many others do, I force myself to eat 3 meals a day, and to snack in between reguardless of being hungry or not.

I would just rather take a prescription medication that has been tested and approved to take during pregnancy than start taking something that hasn't really had the research.
