screening test?

Has anyone opted out to get a screening test where they find out if your baby might have down syndrome?  Is there any other way besides bloodwork that shows you might carry a baby with DS ? I have an appt this Thursday for a scan and haven't had the blood work done.. can I still get it? Kinda worried I didn't..

We opted out because of personal reasons but there are 'soft markers' for DS a sonographer can pick up in an ultrasound. The thing is just because baby may have one of these soft markers does mean they might have DS, its just an indication that it might be worth investigating further such as with a follow up amniothesis screening.

I didn't do it either because people told me that a lot of the time the tests come back positive even when they're not. To do more testing they pull some of your placenta out with a needle. It's very dangerous to the baby...

The amniothesis screening, where they insert the needle to collect some amniotic fluid, gives you a percentage rather then a yes or no. So it really just adds more information if baby already has some or one of the 'soft markers' e.g. lesions in the liver, renal pelvic dialation.

They measure the fluid at the back of babys head and it just says weather thes a risk or not low risk your baby doesn't have have a chance of down syndrome if its high then they will I think take a bit of fluid from around the baby from belly button they will just run test but have you had the scan 1?

They have a new blood test that actually is safer then the needle in the belly (sorry not sure what it is callled) and 100% safe compared to the risk that other injection has.

Yh that why I said and even if  mine was high risk I couldn't have the needle injection because I'm high risk it will risk my pregnancy even more but I wouldn't suggest. Having the needle  thing

Yeah many have gotten false positives it's crazy they still test it. My friend had one and they asked her if she wanted to terminate which is pretty sad, they also offered that thing where the put the needle in the placenta. She was worried sick her pregnancy just to find out she doesn't have DS. I guess I'm more at peace to know that I'm,not the only one not getting it. And yes I've had a scan where the took many pictures from baby's measurements. Is that good? I heard he was okay

I didn't do it just because my insurance didn't cover the screening and the doctor said if the baby had down syndrome we would be able to see it in a ultrasound once the baby was older. Plus since I'm only 19 it's not a big chance.

They can usually tell by the heart. I didn't get the 20w scan because my doctor said the heart looks/sounds perfect. They can also tell by some other organs but I am not sure which ones.

Ultrasounds will measure the fluid on the back of his neck. That is usually enough and further testing if anything is abnormal. And that would be up to you. And usually can check something out with his nose and lip? Depending on how clear it is. But normal ultrasound should be enough

They can only tell by measuring how much fluid around the babys head you can't tell by the heart they send you a letter out I done it with both 3 babys and my results came back low risk and they were right for me my baby girls were born fine even thow they were born before 24 weeks

I had it done all they did was an ultrasound and lab work. Came back negative for me. But you can have both false positives and negatives

They don't come back positive or negative the test deals with percentages. You either have a high chance (percentage) or low chance (percentage) if you have a low chance they won't even tell you...they only say something if the percentages are high because then they like to further investigate with an amniocentesis...but with our age bracket that's very low...I had it done just because I wanted to be prepared either way....they can only do the ultrasound between 11-13 weeks but you can have the blood part of it done whenever. Having had to have my daughter put through genetic testing after she was born because I didn't do the tests while I was prego was enough to change my mind ...regardless your going to live your baby wouldnt you want to be prepared and start making the right life adjustments accordingly?? I would

I also opted out of doing it. I just dont care i guess, because no matter what these are my children ill love them regardless:) and my friend said she got it done and it kept saying her boy would have spina bifida but he is a healthy 2 1/2yr old :) so that testing just causes stress and its not worth it.

Hmm idk what all the gals are  talking about bc it sounds like some are confused and sine had different tests. And you only getv the amnio if you have a test cone back abnormal and choose to do it. And yes you can occasionally getcax false positive on some tests like any tests in life. But I hsd the nuchal translucency ultrasound sound fine at 12 weeks and that is coupled with blood work. Chris for ds asxwell as

I didn't do it because of the false positive thing. I didn't want to have unnecessary stress throughout my pregnancy and regardless of what the test said they are still my babies so I passed. The doctor even told me basically because he has to tell his patients not because he recommended it. And told me about the high false positive rate.

Sry hit post by mistake but test. An someone's have false readings but is fairly accurate. Itc also checks a few other chromosomal disorders one of which is very severe I reccomend it though. And then if you do that its no different than having the quad screen around 20 weeks bc this test replaces that test but is fine in 1st trimester instead of second. So either way you will be tested lol I had quad with first child and nt this time around I prefer the nt test now. Then around 15 weeks you can have the alpha feta protein blood test done which checks for other things as x well chromosomal again.
