Severe anal itching for years

I have had terrible itching bouts for over 15 years since the birth of my last child. I get these itching attacks several times every day where I "dig" and scratch. The itching comes on suddeny and I HAVE to scratch. I have asked my family doctor, gynocologist and dermatologist, but they only prescribe creams that don't work. I've also been checked for pinworms, but I don't have them. I have actually scratched through the fabric on my slacks and pajama bottoms. The only time I've ever had any "scratch free days" was when I was on oral steroids for a month. Could it be allergies? What kind of doctor would you suggest?  I am unable to take a walk in my neighborhood because I have to scratch all the time!

I had severe anal itch and tried many various creams for relief.  One day I used Vitamin E oil and the it was gone almost instantly and has been for several days now.  Try it out.

Hi
Thanks for writing to the forum!
Itchy anus can be due to undigested food like citrus fruits, grapes, certain spices, tomatoes, certain medicines like antibiotics and laxatives and certain drinks like beer, milk, tea, or coffee. Anal fissures, hemorrhoids, threadworms can all cause anal itch. Itch can also be due to irritants like synthetic fiber, toiletries or fungal infection. If you can identify any of these triggers, maybe it will help you.

Dermatitis too is another option that should be exercised. Please consult a gastroenterologist with a specialization in rectum and anal region or if not possible then consult a gastroenterologist.
Hope this helps. Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!

You might have some luck consulting with a proctologist. If oral steroids helped, the itching may very well be from an allergy or skin disorder. Did any of the doctors prescribe you a steroid cream to use? If so, did you have any relief from that? Also, have you been evaluated for (internal and external) hemorrhoids?
