Suffering from quitting smokeing.

I quit smoking December 28th 2009. I almost immediately started gaining weight even tho I cut 200 calories a day from my diet and replaced my need for smoking with tooth brushing. I also added another 6 blocks to my daily dog walking. But sadly I still put on nearly 100lbs and my weight now is given my a new whole bunch of health problems. I now have sleep apnea, hair loss, fingernail loss, acne, acid reflux, strange painful and blistering rash`s all over my arms, legs, hands and feet. I also have gained so much I`ve broken 2 bones and herniated a disk in my back. And I cant get a doctor to care longer then 5 seconds I say I quit smoking and they tell me it`s normal learn to live with it. But I know this is not normal I know lots of people that have quit smoking and they even substituted smoking with food and didn't gain half as much as I have and they lost it all with in a few months it`s been a year and a half and I`m in worse health then when I was smoking a pack a day.

Wow, have you had your thyroid checked? Smoking does mask other ailments and is responsible for regulating blood sugar as well. In fact when you quit, your body has to learn how to do that again apart from smoking. So I would have your sugar levels checked for diabetes as well. I never ever heard of a case like yours! Wow! I wouldnt go back to smoking without getting all that checked out first. There has got to be something the doctors are overlooking.

Well if you have blood sugar issues or hypoglycemia I honestly don't know if it.s safe. I myself can go without eating for days before I start showing any signs of crashing.Any dietician should know how to safely do a cleanse without disrupting your blood sugar.

Now you got my attention! How does that work exactly, the recipee how offten and does it mess with your blood sugar? If I dont eat on time my blood sugar goes south in a very bad way. One of the reasons I used the atkins was it actually controls and in many cases cures blood sugar ills.

This sounds interesting!

Doing fine thanks for asking. So let me give you a little advice the whole breakfast thing is a myth the only thing breakfast is good for is to curb your mid day appetite what kick starts your metabolism is a hormone that has nothing to do with food when you first wake. It is true about the many smaller meals a day 6 to 8 a day depending on your activity.  I also suggest a fat cleanse nothing but water with lemon and paprika for 12 hours every 3 months. Trust me it dose wanders.

I hear you about your weight, LInda and understand completely as I'm very sensitive too and if that makes me shallow, oh well.

Eating breakfast will kickstart your metabolism.  Many don't realize that.  And if you eat say six small meals a day, this will keep your metabolism going and is much better for you than 3 large meals a day.  And lots of water!!  Good job on cutting back on the pepsi.  I know that's hard for some.  My vice is 3-4 cups of that International Coffee stuff.  One small cup is 60calories with 25 fat calories and EIGHT GRAMS OF SUGAR and that's if you use 2 tsps.  Unfortunately, I like it sweeeeet so use 3tsps.  Was sometimes drinking 4cups of that stuff, but now down to 1/2 cup and feel the difference already.

Hangin' In!

How are you doing, TattooGurl?  Sorry to take over your thread.

I think this is another milestone that we must get past in order to be successful at quitting eh? And that is good because those that post here can know what to expect, identify with the feelings and know others came before them. Over the weekend I made a point to eat breakfast, nothing in between meals (this is my problem) and I cut back to one pepsi a day. I got on my bike for at least one jolt a day...Two days later and the bloating is going down, I FEEL lighter so this is good. I am not going home for the huge family reunion we have once a year tho. I am very sensitive about my weight and didnt want to deal with it all. So next year! Hang in there, we CAN do this!

I don't have any children so if I may borrow your daughters wisdom?  That was good.

Funny, but I was thinking along the same lines with the weight gain and starting to smoke again, but, I really cannot go through quitting smoking again, no way!  We are done, Linda, Done!  We've known each other coming up on 4yrs and we Finally are smoke free and never going back.  I began cutting my calories a few days ago and walking as much as I can.  Nothing to wear since nothing fits so I walk after dark, lol...

I thought you would post your progress at the beginning of July but since you didn't, I will congratulate here on your 6mos!  And really, people gain lots of weight on Paxil and as soon as you feel strong enough to wean off it, I'm positive some lbs will melt right off. : )

Your absolutely right. I had a weak moment this morning and was telling my daughter that I really really really could not handle the weight and if I gained much more I would go buy a pack of smokes. This is what she said to me.  Mom, right now you have the smoking conquered so work on the weight gain. If you go back to smoking you dont have control of either.

It made perfect sense and I feel much better about it. So panic mode is over and I will just watch what I am sticking into the pie hole starting tomorrow. It makes me feel good to think I got one down and working on the other. Out of the mouths of our children eh?

TattooGurl...I hope you find a doctor to pay attention to you soon.  This amount of weight gain sure isn't normal as you know.  Congrats on your smoking quit, though!  A year and a half is excellent and a lot to be proud of!

Teko...your weight gain could be due to the Paxil.  I will bet once you stop it, the weight will melt right off.  I took AD's for 24yrs and as soon as I stopped them, I lost 20lbs in 2mo's.  I don't eat any different, but have gained several sizes myself and nothing fits and I don't like how I look At All.  But I'm a non-smoker!!! :/

Wow! Your situation just blows me away. Keep me posted will ya? I didnt start the atkins diet yet, it is something else I got to get the will up to do. lol I did start with the gum chewing tho and it helps keep my mouth busy. lol  I got a bike as well, now for the energy to use it eh? Let me know what you end up doing, it would be a shame to sacrifice your lungs over a weight gain.... But I cant say I wouldnt either.

Yup I have I`ve and I do have a hypothyroidism and I am on the hormone replacements have been now for 7 years. My endocrinologist was my first phone call when I started gaining weight and having all the other symptoms I`ve had a million blood tests, body scans, ultra sounds and even a few biopsy`s to every medical test I have had in the past year and a half I`m perfectly healthy according to my doctors my only problem is I quit smoking and that reason and only that reason is why I`m in such bad shape. I`m on the wait list to see 2 other specialists for second opinions but since I already have a doctor the wait is a lot longer.

I quit a year and and a half ago and I have gone from a size 6 to a size 22 in 4 months. I have not started eating any more then I did before I quit I have actually started eating less and exorcising more. I have seen 3 different dieticians that have changed my diet 3 times in the past year I even went on a pure liquid diet for 3 months that did nothing. It seems that smoking was more then just a bad habit for me it was the only thing keeping me from ballooning up I would start up again if I knew it would help smoking dose`nt make you lose weight.

I quit six months ago and have gone from a size 8 to a 12. Trust me I was temptd to go buy a pack knowing that would solve the weight issue but would put me back to where I was 6 months ago with the smoking. Neither are acceptable. I am gearing up to go on Atkins next week. For someone like me this is a great way to drop weight fast. You however would have to be careful. Are you eating more or differently than when you smoked. Have you picked up munchiness or drinking sugary drinks? It is more of the addictive behavior I think, Im gonna take up chewing gum next I think. If you come up with answers, let me know willya?
