How early do follicles start developing?

OK ladies, need a little help here! Had an u/s today at the RE, and he commented on the 3 small follicles on one side. He sounded very negative like he didn't think they were going to be any good. But here's why I'm confused. I'm on CD20 right now. How big should these follies be on CD20 for the next cycle? Don't they start getting bigger around the beginning of the next cycle? I am not on any Clomid or anything. (He thinks it wouldn't help me with my high FSH.) I had an antral follicle count in January and there was ONE follie on each side. So in my book, if one side now has 3, that's somewhat of an improvement. (I realize 3 is still pretty bad, but it's 3x as many as one!)

Thanks so much! Truly, thank God for you guys! Because if I just listened to all the negativity of the RE's, I'd go crazy! He never sees anything positive! So we'll see what day 3 looks like next month and I'll ask about Clomid! :)

Hi Sherri love, I've been offline for a few days, but back now :)
I know on day 16 of this cycle I had one what the nurse described as developed follicle & she said that she thought that she could see one smaller one on the other side but she wasnt sure.
Great that your follicle count has gone from 1 to 3 tho, you must be thrilled with that :)
& yep I would definately see about Clomid for your next cycle, have heard great things about it, but not tried it at this stage, maybe when I go to see my Gyno on the 19th he will suggest it, but then maybe not as I haven't completed this cycle yet :(

Thanks, sweetie! I SO appreciate your help! Sometimes I think RE's only want you to do expensive treatments and so are less inclined to let you try more affordable things like Clomid. The RE I had been seeing before this latest one did originally say we should try an IUI w/Clomid. Perhaps I should try one cycle with her. Food for thought!

Maybe the vitamins are helping if I went from having one antral follicle to three! :) Thank you again for your help! I know very little about this particle area!

Hi Sherri,
I wonder what it means that you can already see follices a week after ovulation? I would think that means they are growing early and will definately be a good size by ovulation.  Doesn't make sense that he would say they are small.

I responded well to Fermara, didn't really like clomid, but I didn't get pregnant.  Now I am taking all the vitamins you suggested, so maybe it will work out better, can't hurt at this point, so I may try another cycle.

Since you haven't taken Clomid, it makes sense that you would try it.  My friend who has unexplained infertility just did an IUI with Clomid and got pregnant after a year of trying naturally.  She had her first child three years ago, she tried for over a year and then went to RE and did three rounds of Clomid and three IUI's.  So strange that they can't find anything wrong with her and that she can only get pregnant with help. She is now 37.

Anyway, trying something new is always a good idea, just my two cents worth :-)

Hi Risa! I just ovulated last Tuesday (CD13) for the current cycle. Got there for an u/s on Wed (CD14) and was told I had just O'd, too! :) These three small ones he saw today (CD20) must be for the next cycle. I didn't know you could see any so early, (CD20) of the cycle before! Don't know why he would be commenting on how small they are this early! Thanks for suggesting Clomid. Will check w/the RE about that. (I have a very high FSH, too. He acts like Clomid won't do anything for me.)

Sherri,
RE's like follicles to be 20 mm or bigger before ovulation. With Clomid, more will grow and be ready by ovulation.  Naturally, with my high FSH, I will only have 1 follicles most months. With Fermara, similar to Clomid, I would have 3-4.  Since you have 3 already without drugs, I would use Clomid next cycle to see what happens if this cycle doesn't work out for you.

Usually no follicles can be seen if you already ovulated? I have had tons of u/s and some times I arrived and had just ovulated. So, since your RE saw follicles, did he tell you that you haven't ovulated?
