I live in northern,Cali so tthere is a couple hundred in the area, but the good ones take at Near 2months to see. The one I have now is the best I've seen and she's only about a month out. It all depends. Around here most are by refferal only. The endo looks at your records and makes a decision of who needs to be seen right away.
It took me six months to see one if that helps. But we only have four in our city:) To see one of the better ones that is why.
I did! A friend of mine has a wife in med school and she's trying to make a decision on a specialty. I just sent him an email suggesting endocrinology.
The endo's office usually mails me a card to call for an appointment in 3 months time. If I don't call right away upon receipt of the card, they are often already into 4 months out.
When my surgeon first referred me and the endo told her staff to get me in to see her ASAP, it still took 2 weeks to get in. Crazy!!!! I heard she added a doctor to her practice, and I hope that eases up some of the wait time.
If you know anyone in medical school looking for a speciatly, suggest endocrinology.... they seem to be in short supply everywhere!
Glad to see that I'm not the only one. I have an appointment with my primary DO next week and I'm going to ask her to handle my thyroid issues. She originally sent me to a specialist because she thought it was Hashi's from the results of my ultrasound. No antibodies so it's just an enlarged thyroid and I think it's gone down some. I haven't had that golf ball in the neck feeling for about two weeks!
Don’t feel alone.
Honestly, in thinking about my endo’s office, some of the poll choices are making me chuckle. My regular endo’s office starts at three months out, on average. I originally had had a pressing situation and even that took over a week.
Last June I made an appt and the first opening was late Sept. Days before they left a msg saying it had to get cancelled, but to call the office. When I did they said they could reschedule the appt I had to cancel. Huh. When I said, “No, you called me to cancel,” the person seemed thrown. Then the next appt was made for this Jan. Now we’re talking seven months later. I am still under the care of the endocrine surgeon but I’m sure they aren’t basing their scheduling on that.
I definitely chose the last one.

BTW – I did see where you said you got something out of those books I had mentioned. Glad to hear that.
Take care.
Well said RedHead!
My Endo put me into Anaphalactic Shock with Neomercazole knowing full well I had an allergic reaction to them after 6 mths.
Did she return my calls? NO
Out with the Endo.....In with the Primary Care Doctor.
Havent looked back.
I booked an appointment in June and had the appointment in Mid October...next appointment was mid November, but never went...he rang me instead...car broke down! 3rd appointment was an urgent one and saw him in Dec...but he has put me off till April...grrrrr.
I know they are flat out busy and what I do is get my primary care doc to do the relevant blood tests and I go from there.. I have enough medical knowledge to figure out if I need to find another endocrinologist.
As smilerdeb says in Aus you can get your results pretty quickly. I know for a fact that in USA you can get them just as quickly. If you want to wait a few days for pathology to come through then just call your primary care doc receptionist and ask for a copy.
I have discovered that just because a doctor is an endocrinologist does NOT mean they specialise in thyroids! Most do diabetes (easier to figure out the patient!) Bit like saying all mechanics know how to fix all cars...they don't! Take a 1904 Panhard Le Vasseur to a modern mechanic and they will just scratch their heads... same with the endos...yes they know the car has an engine and runs on petrol (gasoline for you USA people!) , (human body and hormones) but have no idea what to do with the crank shaft...( thyroid hormones!)
Maybe its different in Australia but I go for bloods at 8am and they are faxed to me at 2pm the same day.
My Doctor signed a form for me to give to the Laboratory telling them to fax me the results as well as to him.
Yay! I got a good Doctor plus I have every lab test done in a folder. I see him the same day as I have Labs done (usually around 5.30pm so we can work together on it.
My first endo appointment took 5 months.
I was shocked and horrified but the realised why.
I have Graves and the Endo wont entertain anyone who hasnt tried at least 6 months of anti-thyroid meds...hence the 5 months.
My 2nd appointment was 6 weeks after that when she told me not to worry about the side effects of Carbimazole (yeah right!) I was experiencing.
It resulted in Anaphalactic Shock and a ride in an ambulance!
My 3rd appointment....well there never was a 3rd appointment.
My primary took over after that and doing good the last 7 months :)
too long a wait with the new endo so I went to my primary and got in within a few days.
good ? to ask
C~
My appts. depend on how quickly my doctor thinks I need to be seen. Sometimes within two days, if not anything pressing within a month.
My blood work is always two days, then I get a call at home on the results or cell phone either telling me it was all okay, or need dosage adjustments.
My ENT did the referral to the endo around Dec 22, endo's office called me before Christmas and I have first appt for Jan 27, so it's right at a month. Was hoping for sooner, but oh well!!
