My experience went like this. My hair started getting really crappy about 5 years ago. I suspect at this time I was hhypo and didn't know it. It was this brittle. Couldn't get it to grow much. Then last year I found out @ was hypo. When I started on the Levothyroxine after a few monthes I noticed my hair was really falling out bad. I switched to armour, my hair stopped falling out. Even got softer and began growing better. However my tsh went to 188. Extremely hypo(but still nice hair) So I chose to switch back to levo. 3 weeks later I am noticing those familiar hairs in the drain and on my clothes. They say it can't be the meds but I don't buy it. For me anyways.
Here is a quick rundown of my story. Diag. w/Graves Jan.07. Did ATD's until Aug. 07 when I did RAI. Went severely hypo November 07 (TSH was over 100). Started levothyroxine right away. In January, 2008 Endo switched me to Levoxy and increased my dose. Started losing hair in February. I have always been told by stylists that I have a lot of hair. It was coming out in clumps. I hated showering because thats where I noticed it the most. My hands would be covered in it after using conditioner.
So I started flipping out and researching. I read about low ferratin levels affecting hair loss. My internist checked my ferratin level and it was at 14. Low end of normal is 10. She told me it was reasonable to take iron since I still get my periods I wouldn't overdose on it. At that point I was taking all of these things because I read that it helped w/hair loss - Biotin, Evening Primrose Oil and Iron supplements. I even bought Nioxin through my stylist - special shampoo that chemo patients use. My stylist was noticing the thinning in my hair so we tried that shampoo.
In May 08 the hair loss started slowing down. In June I would say it slowed to normal. Even my stylist said it was better. Now what do I think fixed the problem? Who knows. I only take the iron now. My last check of ferratin was 28. Still pretty low. I read that it should be over 50 for hair.
Now that its over, I really think it occurred because my body was either adjusting to the medicine, Levoxyl, or because my body went through pure h*ll that past year from way overactive, extremely hyper then bam like slamming on the breaks and going way hypo fast. It just can't be good for your body.
When I was losing hair I just wanted someone to say it stopped for them. I can tell you it stopped for me. I went to a new stylist and she commented on how much hair I have and had to thin it out. I never thought that would happen again. I went through about 6 months of hair loss.. It was a hard thing to go through. Hang in there.
