I am 24 yrs old and just got diagnosed with hypothyroidism, i'm trying to concieve for last 7 months and my doctor thinks that the reason behind not concieving might be hypothyroidism but the thing is that my periods are regular and if hypothyroidism is affecting my ovulation why are my periods normal and if i am ovulating why am i not getting pregnant?

Yes, you can definitely get pregant with hypothyroidism. I had undiagnosed hypothyroidism and became pregnant very easily at my first attempt. I had blood tests at around 4 weeks gestation and my TSH was at 10. This was very terrifying but I started meds immediately and everything appears to be ok now.

I think it may depend on how severe your hypothyroidism is. Are you being treated now? Definitely get treatment and ensure that your levels are within the normal range before you try to conceive. There are several risks associated with hypothyroidism in early pregnancy so it needs to be under control before you begin trying. I wish I had known about it beforehand!

Hi,

TSH should be 'optimal' at <2.0.  But even more more important FT3 and FT4 should be in the upper 1/3 of the reference range.

If you get pregnant, you need to get your thyroid tested straight away.  You will need to increase your thyroid meds during the pregnancy.  This means TSH, FT3 and FT4 tested every month and meds increased to keep FT3 adn FT4 at the top end of the reference ranges.

When your levels are more optimal, you should have better luck with conceiving.

I wish you the best! Just keep on top of the TSh and make sure it is low enough.

It may or may not be related, especially if your cycle and ovulation is normal.

Have you had thyroid antibodies tested?

Here is a link on pregnancy and thyroid disease:

It took me 9 months to get pregnant the first time .Up to 1 year of trying is considered normal, but I know how stressful it feels.
I more than likely had hypothyroidism then, but was undiagnosed. I went on to have 2 healthy babies. I was just diagnosed last year and my kids are 12 and 9.
Good luck and follow-up with blood tests to make sure TSH levels stay low enough. Below 2.5 is recommended in pregnancy.
