Confused

I just signed up to this forum. I have newly diagnosed with hyperthyroid. I am very down about this. My mother is hypoactive and my uncle from my father's side of the family is hypoactive. I always thought that if I was to have thyroid problems I would be hypoactive like my mother. I am confused to why I ended up with hyperactive thyroid. Anyone else have the similar problem?

I know it can be extremely overwhelming getting this diagnosis.  This is a great website with a lot of support & information.  My understanding of thyroid problems is that it's a lot like allergies - in a family there can be a predisposition for thyroid problems but not a specific type or problem.  For example, my mother, my brother and I all have food allergies but not to the same food.  So when I passed that predisposition towards allergies to my 2 kids - 1 developed a lot of food allergies while the other one has only 1.  Same with thyroid problems - all my aunts on my dad's side have thyroid problems as do I but we have different things and required different treatment.

I hope this has helped and feel free to cry and rant - that's what we're here for.  If you have the time to look through the older posts there is a wealth of information about hyperthyroidism, its causes and treatment.  I'm hyper due to multinodular goiter & underlying Grave's Disease so if you have any questions, please feel free to ask & I'll try my best to answer them.

I am just very depressed about this. I wish this could all be put behind me so I can get on with my life. I know this sounds crazy but this is just all new to me. I am very scared about all of this.
