2.9cm nodule Biopsie or surgery??

Can someone please let me know what the results mean?
Also my nurse said due to the pain and swallowing issues that I have I will have to have surgery to remove my thyroid.  Should I have a biopsy prior to see if it may be cancer?

My thyroid ultrasound results

There is a prominent solid primarily iso/hyperechoic nodule with a hypoechoic rim in the mid and lower pole of the left thyroid lobe measuring 2.9 cm demonstrating increase vascularity.
