can rapid cessation of levo leave you feeling lousy?

you guys,

i ran out of my levo 75 mcg.  i was taking 1-1/2 tablets a day (i upped the dose because i was not satisfied with the rate at which my tsh was declining) and that's about 110 mg/day.  i was doing about 110 for a couple weeks.  then as i started to run out, i decreased it to 75 for a day or so and then zippo.  now 2 or 3 days later i feel tired and wired at the same time, irritable, frustrated, hopeless, want phenobarb and dexedrine at the same time, you know?

does this sound familiar to anyone?

THANKS

When did you last have labs done?  Maybe you actually DO need an increase; it's just that you need to make dosage changes, based on complete labs and symptoms, not TSH.

Good luck.

you're all probably right.  i stand corrected.  i reverted back to my 75 mcg/day morning dose on an empty stomach at least 1/2 hour prior to eating--just like the doctor ordered :)

I agree that you need to keep your dosage consistent. Changing your dosage just to get your TSH to come down, is not a good idea.  Dosage changes should only be based on whether or not your FT3 and FT4 need adjustment to alleviate symptoms; never based on TSH.  TSH is a pituitary hormone and is not indicative of what the thyroid is doing.

I agree with goolarra - it would be good if you could post your labs, with reference ranges, so we can where you are.  A list of symptoms, prior to upping your dosage, would also be helpful.

Have you talked to your doctor?  Has your script for the med run out; or is it just not time to buy more yet?

sounds like a self medicating situation and that is never good.

and I am not impressed with this comment above that I quote

"i was taking 1-1/2 tablets a day (i upped the dose because i was not satisfied with the rate at which my tsh was declining) and that's about 110 mg/day"

"YOU" weren't satisfied with your TSH coming down? - I don't understand that.

Your TSH would be coming down and based off your idea to RAISE your T4 Synthroid would make your TSH go even lower.

The more meds you put in the more your pitutiary is responding and hense - your Thyroid Stimulanting Hormone responder would be LOWER..

I don't think you are understanding the concept of thyroid medication and you need to speak to your doctor about what you are doing.

Consistency, consistency, consistency...anything's better than jumping from one dose to the next and then down to nothing.

Three days off of meds can make you start feeling bad.  When people are overmedicated (hyper), doctors often recommend d/cing all meds for three days, which is usually enough to get rid of the worst of the hyper symptoms.

Just how impatient are you being?  Do you have lab history to post (with reference ranges)?  Trying to rush thyroid meds adjustments usually results in it taking a longer time to get to the "ideal" dose than being patient.  When can you get more 75s?
