My recollection of thyroid storm was this.....
Laying in bed one night watching tv..then Wham!
Heart rate shot up, feeling of not being able to breathe. I first thought it was a panic attack and tried the breathing exersises which did nothing. I wasnt panicking, I was gasping for air.I took 40mg Inderal (beta blocker and it didnt work)
Pain in my chest (crushing) , pain between my shoulderblades at the back, then this feeling of complete disorientation.
I felt like I was outside my body, though could feel the heart beat in every part of my body ..moreso my head. Confusion set in, ...not knowing whether to call an ambulance, ( I even got Robert to put me in the car) to go to the hospital, got up the street and told him to call an ambulance.
he most horrifying part of it was total confusion, didnt know who I was, didnt know where I was, even wondered if I was alive or 'leaving my body'.
I even told Robert ..."I feel like I'm dead".
A weird thing to say but thats how I felt.
Ambulance stabilised me a bit before taking me with 3 Inderal in one hit and oxygen.
Heart rate was 189 resting.
This all happened in a time span of 15 minutes.
I had a heart attack in 1994 and this was similar to that but actually 100 times worst.
I had thyroid storm 3 times in 2 weeks......each episode worst than the last.
Thats when it was decided to send me very hypo (med induced) and arrange for RAI.
My RAI was booked for friday 13th (July)..I cancelled it due to it being that day lol and had it on the 27th June.
The thyroid storms were so bad that I wrote my kids a letter telling them that if I didnt 'make it'...that I loved them very much.
I would not wish thyroid storm on my worst enemy and have not had ONE episode since RAI even though I had 'hyper dump' after RAI around the 5 week mark.
I hope that explains it better for you to understand.
Any sign of a heart rate of 100 resting is dangerous as it puts so much strain on the heart.
if in doubt, get to the Hospital..dont ignore it.
I also experienced thyroid storm some weeks ago and was hospitalised, I was
very disorientated, palpitations, heart rate 159 (resting) vomiting and a really
high fever and couldn`t stop shaking. I thought I was having a heart attack or stroke, one of the most frightening episodes of my life.
My thyroid storm was no fun. Went in to get scan only to be admitted immediately. I did not even know I was in a thyroid storm until the radiologist told me.
I has severe weight loss, (down to 88 lbs, I am 5'2).
My body thought I was a diabetic (but was not), so had to get insulin shots
My kidneys produced protein in the urine
Heart rate 142 resting.
Huge goiter
HBP
Very hyper, was non stop in talking, moving, eating, insomnia.
Sad to say, but I was 24yrs old, and really did not understand what was going on with my body, my PCP at the time kept telling me it was depression, so like an idiot I believed her. I went untreated for graves for 6 months, only thing that saved me was when my dad noticed I had the neck of a football lineman, (goiter). Rest history. That was 15yrs ago.
Mine was never classified as a thyroid storm. Any thyrotoxic event is no fun at all.
My symptoms were:
elevated BP
low grade fever
increased resting pulse
high O2 levels from hyperventilating
severe hand tremors
uncontrollable crying
Good thing I took my lab results to the ER! They thought I was having a heart attack.
Both Smilerdeb and I experienced thyroid storms and they are miserable.
I think it depends on the person too.
It landed me in the hospitol - I was shaking - trembles - horrible horrible panic and anxiety and heart palps ( more like almost feeling like I was having a stoke) were horrble too.
I remember feeling HOT through it all. Like my body was shorting out.
That's about all I can remember.
