Fetal hyperthyroidism

I am 9 weeks 3 days pregnant. I had a total thyroidectomy a little over a year ago, due to graves disease. Now I am treated with synthroid and cytomel for hypothyroidism. Ok first of all I didn't even know they could test a fetus for thyroid problems at 9 weeks. My RE called me to let me know that the baby tested positive for hyperthyroidism. She said not to worry that I will be monitored really close.   ( which I already have been) I have a ultrasound every week how much more could they do? She did mention something about preterm labor and  the baby may be taken early for fetal tachycardia. (to high of heart rate) Im really confused by this and I was all ready really worried now this just adds to it. Anyone else experience this?

Are your doctors testing anything, other than TSH?  You really need to insist that they do the Free T3 and Free T4 on you as well.   It's not unusual for one on T3 medication to have a low TSH; I'm on cytomel, also, and my TSH runs < 0.01 all the time. Will be interested in hearing what your endo has to say.

Im not sure what test they did to find out that the baby is hyperthyroidism. I have a ultra sound and a apointment with my endo on tuesday. I know my last TSH was 0.08 and my doc said that was ok during pregnancy. I will find out more info on tuesday and let you know then.. Thanks so much for the reply :)

I've never had this, but I wanted to say that it does sound like you are being taken care of very well.  Do you know what tests they did to determine that the baby is hyperthyroid?

Do you also have your own current blood test results for Free T3, Free T4 and TSH?  You will need to monitor your own levels in order to make sure the baby stays safe.

It sounds like your doctor was telling that the preterm labor and the baby having fetal tachy, as a "possibility", so you will know, but not as something that WILL happen.

You should try to research and learn as much as you can about the situation; that will help you be able to deal with it easier.
