Sass- I'm trying for the testing, lets hope the endo agrees!
Barb- Thank you for your reply. I do not have a nodule. I did have them when I was first diagnosed 4 years ago, but they have disappeared oddly enough. I have had several ultrasounds and a scan since then, and they are completely gone!
I wrote my endo a long email basically of all my symptoms and begging for pituitary and adrenal testing. Hopefully he will agree. Thanks again for the insight.
It sounds like you may have several things going on. First off, I don't recall -- do you have nodules on your thyroid? It appears that the nodules may be leaking hormone independently of the thyroid. This would make your blood test results swing back and forth; and I'd agree with your doctor -- your levels may be changing before they can be reflected in the labs.
The pituitary gland has a huge responsibility throughout the body and if it malfunctions, so do other glands that depend on it for "direction". It sends signals to the thyroid, adrenals, ovaries, testes directing them to produce hormones, which affect most of the vital functions in your body, along with growth hormone and prolactin for milk production. You need to get it checked. You might also want to check out the website: http://www.pituitary.org, which has some good FAQ's.
You also need to have adrenal tests done; ACTH, 24 hr cortisol, etc. If your adrenals are not working properly, it's recommended that they be treated before treating thyroid issues.
Talk to your doctor and insist that these things be checked out. While you're at it, get them to look into parathyroids as well. While the parathyroids have nothing in common with the thyroid, other than location in the body, they can cause some nasty symptoms.
I don't doubt that you will probably need to have your thyroid removed at some point, but do insist that these other things be investigated as well.
You need a MRI of the pituitary gland. Breast milk is called galactoreah. I had this and it turned out to be tthat pituitary tumor. Very easy to take care of and normally always benign. What is your prolactin level or have they ran it?? Mine was normal, but I still had the tumor. Have you made the cardiologist apt. yet. It is imperative that you do that!!

Thanks Coco. I am going to ask about the ACTH test. I have mentioned the adrenals, but my docs never want to test me. They act like I am asking for a kidney or something when I ask for test. I hope your situation gets better as well.
First, I want to say that I'm sorry that you have to deal with all of this. I know how angry, sad, frustrated and lonely it can make you feel. It really saddens me.
Yeah, it does seem like a pituitary issue AND a thyroid issue. You seem to be on top of it as far as what tests you should have done but I wanted to know if you've had an ACTH stimulation test? If not, you should have your adrenals checked as well as your pituitary before you decide to remove your thyroid especially if the doctor isn't sure if that's the problem.
I know how difficult it is to be calm when you're not sure what to do and when you feel worse than you could ever imagine so I can't tell you not to worry because it's understandable. All I can say is don't stop fighting.
I know Totie. I just feel pressure to make a decision because I am so ill at this point I have to do something fast.
You don't have to decide right away if you need your thyroid removed. Get the surgeon's opinion & THEN go home and weigh the pros & cons.
You will be fine, no need to cause yourself to have anxiety attacks..Stay calm...
So my doc called and said he has seen many test results in which my this highly abnormal (high or low) and many of the test have been out or range. He thinks that mine is changing so rapidly it doesn't always show on the blood work as sometimes it goes back to normal. This is why the uptake showed my thyroid taking in too much iodine. He definitely recommends going forward with surgery or RAI as soon as possible. He wants me to increase the betablocker and take my bp during these attacks. My heart rate goes too low at other times though ugh. THEN he said something that bothered me. He said, if this continues after we take out your thyroid we might find that your thyroid didnt cause this. UMMM isn't it too late to find that out after my thyroid is gone. He said, I definitely have thyroid issues that are causing this, but there are other things too. Ummm okay. Call me crazy, but I'd rather have someone be SURE of whether or not it is my thyroid or pituitary or whatever it might be, BEFORE my thyroid is removed. I'm so scared of what to do. I need help fast, and I really cannot go to another doc. This is the second one and I'm out of options as far as my insurance goes. I have to trust him, but I'm afraid to make the wrong decision.
I have been taking a very low dose of the beta blocker (not even the whole 25 mg). I basically take 3/4 and take the other 1/4 as needed (like last night). My heart rate is so unpredictable that it is hard to measure. Sometimes it is too low. I get spikes of heart racing, but other than that it is okay. During this time my calcium level and pth has also come back questionable. My D is so low that it's scary (But can't take the D without extreme problems and heart racing). I've started developing hypoglycemic type reactions to things. When I mean my whole body is a mess, I literally mean EVERY part of it. Before I was even diagnosed with a thyroid disorder, and before I even had my son I had breast discharge on one side. The docs thought it was questionable so they sent me to have a mammogram and ductogram. They said I was fine, and I was young so I never explored things. I was a vegetarian since I was 12 so I ate a lot of soy over the years. My hair was falling out really bad as well, but I have thick hair so again I never thought of anything. I used to be 5ft6, but grew to 5ft8 in what I assume is my 20's. I'm not sure when I grew. I hurt my knee at 21 and in the x-ray they seen spots all over my bones and worried about bone cancer. They sent me for a bone scan which showed just calcium harmless spots. All this stuff is coming together now and I wonder if it is all related. If it is a pituitary problem, I wonder why I have thyroid antibodies. I guess it's possible I have hashi's and one. My antibodies were at 250 a few months ago, but they fluctuate along with everything else. I just don't know anymore.I have been getting horrible headaches in what I would consider my sinus area for the last several months. My thyroid seems to be okay at times as above it looks good. Then boom it just shoots up or down without warning. I never know what it is doing, and it makes it impossible to treat me. I can't take the meds as they send me hyper, even the most smallest amount you can think of (Like 1/4 of the lowest dose every 4th day). I need meds usually though. Most of my blood tests are over 2.84. This has been one of the lowest I have seen. Everything is 100 times worse before my menstrual cycle. I literally have to wait to go to the ER before it starts. AHHHHH!
It does sound like you're experiencing hashitoxicosis. Were you taking the beta blocker when you had your run of tachycardia or did you stop taking it when you were feeling better?
Yea, I think an MRI would be good too. Oh and don't worry about the typo's, happens to all of us here lol.
eh don't mind the typos.. I haven't slept at all =(
Aside from when my tsh went to .001 in August (and I believe I was going through a thyroid storm) my tsh has always been hypo or borderline hypo. I have been gluten free and it has seemed to lower my tsh. Oddly enough at the same times my tsh was showing slightly hypo, my uptake showed very hyper. The doc said I took in way too much iodine. My heart rate has been running low for the last few weeks. Last night I just had horribly heart palps, that cause my pulse to spike. I do have symptoms of a pituitary problem, so I am really beginning to wonder if this is more my problem. This blood test was taken 8 days ago however and mine seems to change all the time so maybe it is outdated. I felt pretty good at the time of testing. I meet with the surgeon on May 10, so I guess I"ll just have to see what happens.
sorry meant to write 2.78 for your ft3
Wow, I don't know what to tell ya. Things don't match up, for instance your HR was 160 last night but your FT3(which is the main contributing factor to HR) is only 96. Your TSH is normal but on the high end of normal for someone who is hyper. Have they given you an MRI? I wonder if it's time to start looking for other causes. Insomnia and shaking is also a symptom of fibro...all these diseases mimic each other so much, I can see why there's always confusion. Then again, hashitoxicosis is in it's own family....
