Low B12 and low ferritin will also cause hair loss. I had low ferritin, and my hair loss has improved since taking 2 iron pills/day. My temple areas are filling back in. I would have to say I lost about 50% of my hair since May 07, but it was thick to start with and curly, so curls make it look fuller than it is. Going short helped as well.
Good luck!
I also had basically no vitamin B12 in my body, either due to the thyroid or my birth control, apparently it causes most of the same symptoms as hypothyroid...meh!
I was undiagnosed and untreated for around 1.5 years, every doctor I saw said I was fine and within a normal range, however my "normal range" made me feel horrible. The first thing I noticed almost 2 years ago was my hair falling out, now its just a waiting game to see if it comes back. I have heard of more success on combination therapy, synthroid+cytomel or armour, one of the first thing my doctor said to me when i met her was " if you dont repsond well to t4 alone, we will use t3 as well" which is nice, i heard not all with perscirbe both.
good luck to everyone :)
Hi. I suffered horrible hairloss from start of synthroid May 07 until my switch to Armour in June 08. I have only been on Armour since June 28th. and already I am begining to notice less loss. I can say that my ferritin level was very low so I started on a supplement in late April and brought that level up significantly.
for me its a wait and see. My hairloss was massive the year on synthroid. I do hope the changes I've made stick....we'll see.
One of the first things I noticed was a bald spot on the front of my head. I have really thick hair so no one takes me seriously but I know my hair is thinner.
I'll be interested in the responses. I lost about 1/4- 1/3 of my head air and alot of my eyebrows...some of the head hair grew back (not all) and alittle bit of my eyebrows grew back over the 20+ years I've been hypo. Fortunately I had thick hair so it's not noticeable to anyone else besides my hair salon folks.
