I expect that the T4 test is Total T4, for which ranges typically are like 4-12. A Total T4 test represents all the T4 in your body. Only a small portion of that is biologically active. So for a better understanding of your status you should always make sure they test for both Free T4 and Free T3. Free T3 is used by all the cells of your body to create the energy needed. Free T4 has to be converted by your body to Free T3 to be metabolized.
Based on your symptoms and very limited test results I expect that the doctor wants to explore the possibility of you being hyperthyroid. Most likely he will want to run a Thyroid Stimulating Immunoglobulin (TSI) test, to check for Graves' Disease. Graves' disease is a type of autoimmune problem that causes the thyroid gland to produce too much thyroid hormone, causing hyperthyroid symptoms like you mentioned. .
I suggest that you do some reading on the internet about Graves'. I think at this time of year, deferring a return appointment until 2017 is dependent on your tolerance of your symptoms.
First thing to know is that the tests for T3 Uptake and Free Thyroxine Index are outdated and not very useful. Next is whether the T4 test is Total T4 or Free T4. They are quite different and we need to know the reference range shown on the lab report in order to assess that result.
Most important, what symptoms do you have, if any?
