Has anti-depressants help any hyperthyroid person

Hi,
I've been diagnosed hyperthyroid recently, and my anxiety is working overdrive 24\7, it's so bad at times, I won't sleep for 24-32 hours, I have chronic tinnitus, actually every symptom in the anxiety manual.

I feel as if I drink several cases of soda daily or 10 gallons of coffee, it's virtually impossible to relax, the only way I fall asleep is after being completely exhausted from anxiety.

Has anyone had positive experiences with anti-depressents ??

I went through Klonopin withdrawal he!!  and terrified of Benzo meds.

But my thyroid anxiety is so bad,  I am not getting any relief at all, it's been persistent for 2 weeks straight, non stop 24/7,.  This is the worst anxiety, I have ever felt in my life, thanks to my unbalanced thyroid.

Thanks for any input.

I was on anxiety meds ( Xanax) for about 4 yrs during my whole experience through hyper and then hypo thyroid. I swung from one end to the other after RAI for years due to autoimmune issues. I even toyed on occassion with these types of meds previously Dx'd with hyper for over 10 yrs - due to a doctor saying I was just stressed out.

It does help get through some of the anxiety - but it is just a cover or blanklet for a root problem. I feel whole heartedly that when a person feels terrible with this type hormone imbalance we do need help with meds to control some of this stress, but our goal being on them should be short lived.

I was on the meds way too long. It was a horrible withdrawal for me - even at tiny decreases. Still I was unbalanced with my condition while weening off the meds and it was he// -

Seriously - we are all different. Some have no thyroid left ( as I) some have ups and downs and still have their gland. Some have autoimmune thyroid disease and that is different too. BUT everyone has a reason why the body is reacting this way. Most of the time is just isn't chalked up to the thyroid being whacked out. It can be as simple as a mineral - vit deficiency to a full blown other condition like adrenal disorders or insullin issues.

It's working together with your doctor to find the root issues and solving them. Don't let your doctor just push the pills at you and send you off. Take the meds - but make it clear to the doctor you know there is a medical reason why you feel this way and you want to work with him/her at finding it. So many of us just take the script and be miserable without really knowing what wrong in our bodies.

I think my journal on my profile "Traveling down the thyroid nightmare" really explains this alot more.

Hi,
Thanks for reply & sharing.  Wonderful news, the Lexapro has been helping your anxiety.  Anxiety caused by the thyroid is horrible !!!  Nothing like I have every experienced before.

Are you hypo or hyper ??

I alway's rejected the idea of anti-depressants, cause they take too long to work.  But I'll discuss my options with the Endo next week.  Just desired some feedback, cause docs alway's prescribed the strongest meds possible, then start to decrease, when prescribing to me.

Good luck, wish you the best !!

Hi,
I just wanted to share, that I know there are members that take anti anxiety meds, to help them through difficult times with thyroid anxiety.  But members are too afraid to share thier experiences.  I had a very bad experience taking Klonopin, but I don't blame the medication, I blame the idiot doctor that prescribed it to me, he didn't have any knowledge of the med, very uncaring, and &&^^%^%%$ !!!!

I cold turkey from Klonopin, went into convulsions, stayed over night in the ER, then had to get online, to teach myself how to taper, from other members at forums, then went through withdrawal hell, from fast taper.

Although I had a very bad experience, does not mean everyone has, and I know there are people out there, that has had great results and proper treatment from thier doctors, to help them through anxiety.  I was hoping to read some positive stories.

So if anyone has a positive experience and a story to share, please email me at the forum, if too afraid to post.

Thanks & Good luck !!!!

I am now extremely hypo my tsh is at 32.00 so I am also experiancing the anxiety again. It's funny how hyper and hypo symptoms are very similar. I actually thought my blood tests were going to come back low again. haha the joke was on me.

I too am sensitive to drugs and also found out when I have anxiety I am very afraid to take them now. My dr. prescribed claratin for me and I have never taken it before so I am really stressing about taking that tiny little pill. I am actually scared I will have a reaction to it. Sounds stupid but I just can't help it.

Good luck at the dr. hope things go really well for you

Hi,
Thank you !  Sorry to read, you experienced, what I'm going through, and hope your feeling 100%,.

Sometimes I feel as if I'm losing my marbles !!!  It is so hard to describe how I feel 24/7, I look normal on the outside, but inside I'm going bonkers !!  I feel as if I'm persistently skydiving, with no parachute !!!!!! Yikes !!

Medications has helped lots of people, but I'm one of the few that is sensitive to any meds I take, even aspirin.  I've been to the ER, from allergic reactions to 10-15 different meds, lost count.

Well I just hope, my thyroid treatment works for me, once I get back to the doc next week.

Thanks & Good luck !!!

I feel so bad for you. I was overmedicated for a couple of years and was hyper. I know exactly what you are going through. Before I knew I was overmedicated my dr. had me trying every antidepressant I could. They all made it worse.  The only one I could tolerate was Cymbalta. I really liked it but after several weeks it gave me chronic diarreha (or maybe it was from being overmedicated) I ended up dumping all the antidepressants and taking lorezapam and then like you didn't want to go through the withdrawl so I would only take it when I absolutely had to. I know there are a lot of members who are hyper and have graves perhaps they can comment on which ones may help. I just wanted to let you know there are others that know what you are going through. I hope you get your levels where they need to be so you can feel normal again.
