Hashimato Nutrition

Hello!  I was diagnosed with hashimotos disease about 7 years ago.  I am currently on 88 mg of Synthroid.  I am having lots of symptoms, so I think I'm having a T3/T4 issue.  I have an appointment with a new endo in a couple of weeks.  However, in the meantime, I've been thinking about my diet.  It seems that everything I'm reading says to go gluten free if you have hashimotos.  

So my question... are you gluten free?  Any other dietary restrictions?  I'm just curious about others' experiences.

Thanks for your insight!  I appreciate it!  I really think I'm having a conversion issue, but I guess we'll see once I get some lab work done.  Glad to know that I can come here if I need help interpreting also!

Oh, you wouldn't believe how many different ways there are to misspell poor old Hashimoto's name!  Thus the shortcut "Hashi's".  LOL  Once you post something, you can't edit it.  Don't give it another thought...

If your numbers are really right, which means FT4 about the middle of the range and FT3 upper half of range, and you still don't feel right, it might be worth a try.  However, if you suspect a conversion issue, I'd definitely address the FT3 level before jumping on the g/f bandwagon.  

I've heard of people who were able to lower their dose of T4 on a g/f diet, which I suspect was due to improved absorption in the gut.  I fail to see the efficacy of that.  What difference does it make if you take 88 mcg and absorb 88 or take 100 and absorb 88?  I also don't know how much of that was placebo effect.  

Have I ever heard of anyone being "cured"...after more than 10,000 posts on this forum, not the first.  I've heard people claim to have lowered their antibodies with g/f diet.  Once again, though, that takes a long time to confirm since antibodies can vary wildly even intraday.  

My personal feeling is that if a g/f diet were able to help Hashi's, it would be in the very early stages, when most of us don't even know the antibodies are there.  After seven years since your diagnosis (and how many years before that were antibodies present?), your thyroid has to be getting close to being dead.

See what your FT3 is doing.  If you need help interpreting, we can do that.

Thanks for your input!  I don't REALLY want to go gluten free.  I just want to feel better, so I didn't know if it was something I should consider.  I'm wondering if anyone actually had success with it.  

And yikes on spelling Hashimotos wrong on the title of this thread.  Wish I knew how to fix it!

I have Hashi's and was g/f for close to a year.  I did it for reasons other than Hashi's, didn't expect it to change my Hashi's, and it didn't.

Going g/f is a commitment.  It's months before you can evaluated the effects.

Goitrogens are to be avoided raw...cooked, they're fine.

My advice on diet is that if it makes you feel better, do it.  If you're doing it to improve your Hashi's, you're probably going to be disappointed.
